California Restaurants Cut Jobs as Fast-Food Wages Set to Rise

Sure it is.

McDonalds for example uses wheat for it's buns (and even a bit of sesame seed!), beef, tomatoes, lettuce, pickled cucumber, and American cheese (a dairy product). Their fries are made from Russet potatoes (most of which is grown in Idaho, Oregon and Washington). Their orange juice is from fresh oranges raised in Florida and other like places. Their fish for their fish sandwich is whitefish, breaded with cornmeal. Their eggs for their breakfasts come from the same place and the same kind of chickens you get your eggs from. Their pancakes are made from wheat.

What is unhealthy about it?

McDonald's actually has what amounts to Mil-Spec standards for their products.

Back in the 80's when McDonald's opened its first restaurant in Moscow, the company couldn't find in-country suppliers for any of the products they needed. They had to build bakeries, train farmers, set up meat packing plants, etc., so their standards could be met. The workers had to go to months of training to learn how to properly greet and handle customers, work the kitchen, etc., because the Russian work ethic wasn't fitting their corporate policies.

That is, they kept their standards and raised the quality and expectations of their workers and suppliers, not let them slide.

So, whatever you think of Micky D's products, they do have standards and they are actually quite high.

There are always multiple factors at play. Is pay for every 'low paying' job suppose to be geared towards someone who is 40 years old trying to support a family? Are kids who work summer jobs or get their first jobs at 16 suppose to be paid 'a living wage with benefits'?

The gov't forcing an increase like this allows those who have a job to earn more money. The trade off is less jobs as employers cut back hours and lay off workers as well as go more to automation, and an increase in the cost of what they are selling to consumers.

You can take ALL the 'multiple factors' and shove 'em in the trash. Here's why:

In capitalism, the price of anything, including wages is set by market value. No intervention by anyone is required.

This means all workers are paid their market value. Someone with a rare skill that's in demand will obviously make more money than an untrained schmuck that doesn't know how to pee.
If someone is finding themselves in a low paying job, they, and only they, can do anything about it. They are in a job where there are a lot of people that can do just what they can do, and competition forces your wage down. The solution is to get training in some better paying job (become worth something to somebody...what a concept!), or just go out and start your own business. The prices you charge are the same as any other similar business in the market, just like a wage is.

Price controls always cause the same problem: shortages. That's why they never work. Wage controls are just price controls. Minimum wage laws only put people out of work.

It's not about 'earning a living wage'. It's about being worth something to somebody for the skills you have. If you do that, THEN you can afford the nice car, the nice home, the various goodies that go with having cash to spare.

But it takes work. It takes initiative and drive. If someone doesn't have it, they are forced to admit that they are a lazy bum...whining about their miserable state.

And it's their own fault.

Dear fucking idiot

Humans buy more when they have more to spend

That money doesn’t go into some black hole you Russian whore bot hole

Fuck you very much

So go out and make yourself worth something to somebody. Don't whine about your miserable lot here. That won't get you any money.

shit like this is a prime example that displays the incredible lack of knowledge that democrats have with economies

Exactly. That's because they reject the very fundamentals of capitalism.

Voluntary production of products and services for voluntary sale at the agreed upon price.

I agree that it's complicated.
I've seen the electric ordering devices that a lot of fast food chains are trying to get people to use.
Also, a lot of them have closed.

Except for Dunkin Donuts, which are everywhere around here, all of the chains have fewer stores than they did ten years ago.

Not because they are automated. Because of other regulations that caused that business to fail.

So go out and make yourself worth something to somebody. Don't whine about your miserable lot here. That won't get you any money.

Evince is, by her own admission, a pothead who smokes it all day. That pretty much, on its own, makes you unemployable. And no, the government shouldn't give somebody that's doing that a nickel's worth of welfare.

Because many people are in positions where getting a job that pays something is perfectly acceptable. For example, if you are 16 and get a job, you don't have to support yourself, your parents still do that. You get experience with work and some spending money.

Someone who cannot, or will not, get a job that pays more than minimum wage over a lifetime of work is either a moron or a fool. Morons simply don't get paid more because they can't do more. They have no inherent "right" to a "living wage." Fools have even less right to one.

The average age of fast food workers is 23.

The average age of fast food workers is 23.

So? If the best you can do for a job is stand at a counter and say, "Do you want fried with that?" you might reconsider your life choices. Your inability to get a better job, for whatever reason, is mostly or entirely on you. That doesn't entitle you to a "living wage" simply because you think you deserve it either.

Why? I don't get along with Vinny either, but if she needs welfare, she needs welfare.
What kind of regressive reactionary are you?

Coffee and fries are the money makers.
I built Burger Kings throughout the 80's. Back then the cup cost more than the soda that was in it. You can argue that they sell more soda than coffee, but you are correct. The best coffee on the market is about $8/lb, and less if you do the volume that fast food chains do.

You get a hell of a lot of $2.00 cups of coffee from a lb. for sure.

She doesn't "need" welfare. I see it as someone who over indulges in a vice, be it sex, drugs, alcohol, whatever, and cannot manage their life in a reasonable manner as a result is undeserving of government largesse until they stop doing whatever it is that makes them useless to society as a whole.

If you can afford to smoke marijuana, or for that matter cigarettes, all day, you don't need welfare. You need a job to pay for your vice. If you can't pay for your vice STOP FUCKING DOING IT UNTIL YOU CAN! Your stupid life choices are not something I or others should be supporting in any way, shape, or form.

Now, if you, and others want to give some dumbfuck like that YOUR money, that's fine by me. Your altruism is to be admired. But when you tell me I have to fork over against my will because it's "compassionate" or "the right thing to do," or the like, then I draw the line. Altruism should not be forced. It doesn't work, and never will. That's why Socialism fails every time, and will fail every time.

Lack of social responsibility,
which the right calls "freedom,"
is why trumpanzees need to be purged from our population.

California state law is set to raise fast-food workers’ wages in April to $20 an hour. Some restaurants there are already laying off staff and reducing hours for workers as they try to cut costs.

Scream about raising the min wage than loose your job....FUCKING IDIOTS

If the minimum wage had kept pace with gains in the economy's productivity over the last 50 years, it would be nearly $26 an hour today, or more than $50,000 a year in annual income, one economist said.

There is a huge worker shortage for fast food restaurants, which is causing many of them to close, at least some of the time. If this was really causing many restaurants to lay off staff, it might just save the fast food industry by freeing up workers.

Or, just possibly, if the minimum wage were realistic for the work performed instead of pricing labor out of the market... Because if fast food workers and other minimum wage employees made $26 an hour, skilled workers would be making $50+ dollars an hour and minimum wage workers would still be unable to afford shit because the prices would adjust to fit those wages.

Oh, so you think everybody owes YOU a living do you? Well, got news for you, nobody else does. That's on you.

I haven't needed to "make a living" for a long time.

When I speak of social responsibilities,
I'm talking about MY responsibilities to society as well,
but yet, the way your reptile right wing mind works,
you reply as if I were speaking of my entitlements instead.

This is a different subject, however.
This is about the tragic limitations of the right wing brain.
