Records amounts of snow - up to 30ins - are expected to be dumped on the Washington area.
The US capital is bearing the brunt of the storm as the National Weather Service (NWS) puts the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area under a rare 24-hour blizzard warning.
Some 23ins of snow had fallen by Saturday morning and thousands have been left without power.
The storm, dubbed 'Snowpocalypse' and 'Snowmageddon' by many locals, stretched from Indiana to Pennsylvania and into parts of New York and North Carolina.
It is threatening to trap millions of people indoors for days and create treacherous travel conditions.
The storm "will significantly impact most of the region through Saturday," the NWS said.
Forecasters said the Washington region would be hardest-hit, describing overnight Friday to Saturday travel conditions in the area as "hazardous and life-threatening".
Blizzard warnings are also in effect in much of Delaware and New Jersey.
Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia each declared snow emergencies.
The declarations allow states to activate emergency agencies including the National Guard to help prepare for the wintry onslaught and cope with its aftermath.
News of the storm sparked long queues at supermarkets as shoppers rushed to stock up on food and drink ahead of a traditional party weekend for watching the Super Bowl football game on Sunday.
President Barack Obama, who previously has made fun of the reaction in Washington to small amounts of snow, was not taking this storm lightly.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said: "I think even a transplanted Hawaiian to Chicago has sufficient respect for a forecast of nearly 2ft of snow."

The really bad part for areas like D.C. is that they're totally unequipped to deal with even a moderate snowfall. It makes no fiscal sense to purchase snow clearing equipment for an area where any snowfall (usually max. 2") typically melts by the next lunchtime. When I lived there they'd close the schools if there was even a threat of two inches of snow. Seriously.

We were watching some of this on the weather channel, and hoped that people had had the foresight (because they did have plenty of warning ahead of time) to stock up on food, blankets, and candles, etc.

Just like last summer when the Pacific NW got hit by a heatwave. Not many of us invest in AC for our homes. It was a week of sheer misery.

I saw the snow storm on the news at my Air National Guard unit this morning. At the end of my duty day, I started to sit in on an exercise, and there was sooo much weather clutter on the radar because of the storm.

There is no traffic.

Big Gubmint let everybody go home early Friday, and they're still home. With pay.

Thanks for supporting Big Gubmint!

On Friday I said we were expecting 8-10 inches. We got 22"! The governor put our county in a state of emergency. People were ordered not to be on the roads unless they were first responders or medical workers. There were huge power outages and the water company said we weren't supposed to use any water (!). There's been no mail or newspaper delivery. Road crews can't keep up and lots of people are snowed in. Yesterday afternoon the Sun came out and melted a bit -- then the temps dropped and all the wet snow turned to ice! Right now the temp is 7 fahrenheit, or -13.88 C. To add insult to injury, another storm is gearing up to hit us on Tuesday or Wednesday.

It's pretty awesome, actually. :cof1:
