DOE releases 1 million barrels from Northeast Reserve in attempt to bring down gas prices

One million barrels of gasoline have been released from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve in an effort to lower gas prices, the Department of Energy announced Tuesday.

According to the DOE, the barrels will be sold at an average price of $2.34 per gallon — days before the July 4 holiday, when more than 60 million people are expected to hit the roads this year. The move is unlikely to have a significant impact on gas prices, however, as the amount being sold only amounts to a fraction of gasoline used in a single day.

The United States consumed an average of nearly 9 million barrels of gasoline per day in 2023, according to the Energy Information Administration. That means the barrels that are being released would amount to approximately three hours’ worth of additional fuel for the country.

The USA produces far more oil than we consume, and with high investment in oil production, it looks set to produce even more oil.

Less than 1% of our oil comes from Venezuela, and that would easily be replaced by the huge surplus we have of oil.

If they were hell bent on it, they'd release the entire supply... Just empty the tanks all at once... This is vote buying on the sly. They aren't trying outright to "destroy America." Instead, they are trying to retain power by any means practical and that means releasing oil periodically to keep prices down. Sure, in the end, it will deplete the US oil reserve, but they see that as simply a necessity on the road to transitioning to 100% green energy.

Like everything with the Left, the goals are immediate, and any long-term effects are ignored. At the same time, the Left is politically savvy enough not to do something so overtly stupid and obvious that they'd be hammered for it. Thus, only a partial release each time.

No, a million barrels, just as was done a back in May, to keep prices at the pump low. It is a futile gesture however, as a million barrels represents less than 5% of one day's oil usage in the US. It makes next to zero difference in the market.

And the petty politics of lowering gas prices a few cents for a short period of time is not what the reserves are for.

Well, that's just freakin' marvelous! So why are they tapping the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve? And if we're swimming in the stuff, why aren't they paying ME to fill my tank?
