plane hits building in Austin

I think this guy is the radical extension of the tea party movement.

Had there been a liberal equivelent to the Tea Party when Bush was President they would be calling it a terrorist orginization. Remember Cindy Sheehan, the GOLD STAR mother who was attacked.

STFU! The guy was clearly a leftist. His rant sounds like the bitching and moaning of Michael Moore.

How was Cindy Sheehan attacked?

This common view that trying to keep more of the money that you earned is greedy and bad is pure nonsense.

It's not nonsense. He owes for government services. What could be more fair than receiving government services and not having to pay for them unless you get the money first? He is only billed after he earns the money. If he didn't earn the money he wouldn't owe anything. Try that with the phone or the hydro company.

Our tax code is currently over 56,000 pages long. Even the IRS cannot agree on proper interpretations.

I am sure everyone has heard of Tax Freedom Day? Its the day of the year at which the average american's would finish paying his tax burden.

In 1900 that day was January 22nd. In 1950 it was Feb. 12th. In 1950 it was March 31st. And in 2000 it was May 3rd. Last year it was April 13th. (showing some improvement).

The fact that we work for 2.5 months of the year just to pay our taxes is nuts.

It is not as if this guy was taking some principled stand against the IRS. He was attempting to best them through stealth. I have far more respect for the Irwin Schiff types.

He did not want to be one of the suckers. If he had gotten away with it, I would not much care. But his whole rant showed that he was primarily pissed that the rich did not get caught.

The IRS is crooked but this guy bitches about not having health care provided for him. Is he too stupid to understand how that must be financed? No, he just wanted someone else to pay for it.

Exactly! He kept trying to cheat and the government kept catching him. He even admitted it was insanity. He kept doing the same thing and getting the same result.

Considering he was an engineer it might be worth it check some of the projects he worked on. Who knows what insane methods he used.

Yes, the guy was a crook, a stupid one at that. He used the roads and schools and everything else the government supplies which you helped pay for. In other words he tried to steal from you and the government caught him.

How many other engineers are working just as hard as he did but are contributing to society? Probably lots.

And what's with the $12,000.00 his wife "forgot" about? It must be nice to have so much money ones forgets about $12,000.00.

When I hear things like that the government should take the entire $12,000.00. Hey, if you forgot about it just forget the government took it.

The point of his rant, as well as I could understand it, was not that he had to pay taxes at all, but that he was paying different rates than so many others. He was pissed that there are so many loopholes and that its such a convoluted system.

Looking at the tax tables, you can see how bad it is.

If you taxable income is $75K, if you are single you will pay 20% of your income in taxes. But if you are married filing jointly you only pay 15% of your income in taxes.

About 5 years ago I hired a CPA to manage my taxes for a small business with 5 employees. I paid this guy about $4000/ year. When I dumped that business I dumped him as well. A year later I got a letter from the IRS notifying me of a $2000 fine, and the rest of the letter was unintelligible. So I called them up, and after being on hold for a while and tossed around to several departments I got a young woman on the phone, and I asked her what the fine was for. It turned out the CPA had used the wrong form when sending them money. I asked her if I had sent the correct amount and she said yes, but I had used the wrong form. I told her that they had obviously cashed the check and she told me that I had used the wrong form. I told her that I had hired a CPA to make sure that I was abiding by the law and she told me that I was the president of the company and that I had used the wrong form. So I asked her what recourse I had and she gave me the number of a form to file.

I called one of those attorneys that advertises on he radio about IRS problems and he told me that the fine wasn't big enough for him to bother with. I called my Congressman and that office told me that since the matter had gone beyond a certain point they couldn't intervene. So I filed the form and then got a second notice of the same fine and that my bank account would be seized yada yada. Then a couple weeks later a notice from my bank that the money had been confiscated. Then a second notice that another $2000 had been seized as well. I assume that second shot was because I sent in the wrong form to appeal the fine.

To add insult upon insult to injury the IRS then sent six of my biggest clients a notice that they had seized $4000 out of my bank account.

All I can say is that this guy should have targeted more carefully to have taken down some top policy makers that put him in the predicament that he was in. Maybe he could have put a nice little army together, as I'm sure there are many more of us out there who have been screwed by this agency. He could have been a patriot instead of just a martyr.

It is likely not too late, Tax law generally has a 7 year SOL, but professional negligance may be much shorter. You should consult both a lawyer and a CPA. My brother is a CPA and he often is able to negotiate these fees down signifigantly or have them waived.

I have a good friend who was in a very simular situation and with a couple letters my brother was able to get the penalty and interest waived.

WAAAA WAAA! Being an American and protecting our freedom and going to war based on fear and agression should be free!

WAAAA WAAAA! I dont want to accept any personal responsability for the great benefits I have recieved as an American!

Now, that's BS. He did not try to steal from us.

The amount of federal income tax that pays for schools and roads is very small. That is mostly paid for at the local and state levels. Why is it that is always the example given?

You should instead say something like, he uses the welfare and warfare programs and everything else the federal government supplies. Except he probably benefited little if at all from those things.

My problem though is that he seemed to support welfare programs. You can't really argue for those things and claim some right to evade paying taxes.

No where in any of the info I have seen does it say that he paid no taxes. He is paying taxes. He is just trying to keep as much of the money he earned as possible. Why is that idea reviled by so many? And by the same people who don't mind handing money to people who did nothing to earn it.

He pays the gov't when he earns his money. Then he pays the gov't when he spends his money. And if he saves his money he pays taxes on it yet again.

And every product you buy has taxes they paid as part of the price. The taxes paid on buying raw materials are in the price. Taxes are paid on the purchase of the equipment to manufacture the items. Taxes are paid on the payroll paid to the employees who manufacture the item. Taxes are paid on the fuel to ship the item. Taxes are paid by the store who purchased the item. Taxes are paid on the employees of the retail store where you buy the item. And ALL of those taxes are part of the price.

And the gov't seems to think the money is theirs to blow or waste as they see fit.

How else should the Government pay for the Iraq war?

962,000,000,000....

That has to be paid some way.....

WHy do the cons whine and cry about money spent on text books for Americans and helping America's poor, but are cool voting for a war that does not benefit anyone and costs more than 962,000,000,000!

http://www.costofwar.com/

That question assumes that the Iraq war should be happening.

Regardless of if it should or should not have happened, we must pay for it because it did happen.

I was one of the VERY FEW against it, yet I still have to pay for it, its part of the agreement when you live in a Representative Republic.

The amount of federal income tax that pays for schools and roads is very small. That is mostly paid for at the local and state levels. Why is it that is always the example given?

Because those are the most obvious tax supported things that most everyone uses....but let's not let the secret out that like you said, the amount of Fed. tax that goes to schools and roads is small and that they are mostly supported by local taxation. How anyone can look at the "tax freedom" date and not be angered or at least concerned is beyond me. I don't mind at all paying for the services I use and even paying for some that I don't use but all the waste in government really ticks me off. If people really don't think we can streamline federal government spending or that we should just continue to let them have what they want out of our paychecks they are a brick or two shy of a load.

How else should the Government pay for the Iraq war?

People like Jarod just assume that if you are opposed to so much taxation that you were in favor of the Iraq war...after all, that is the right-wing position isn't it?

I know many were not, but most were. Are you trying to tell me that the majority of the tea party, those wildly cheering on Sarah Palin, were against the Iraq war?

Why the debate on whether this guy was "right" or "left"?

He was a nutcase. He flew a plane into a building.

Right...and why bother debating whether the Obama administration is culpable because somehow this nut didn't get spotted and/or stopped by homeland securtiy (like I saw on CNN yesterday). He was a nut...nuts do nutty things...you cannot predict the actions of all nuts.

I would tell you that many of them were. Besides, however many years later it is now, some of them may have even seen the error of their ways if they were for it to begin with. But this debate is about the taxation system of the US government and the waste of the taken monies. Do you deny that this is happening?

If you reconize the error of your ways why go crazy for Sarah Palin who is still cheering the war...! Why pay her a $1000,000 speaking fee?

If you were for the war, step up and acknoledge it should be paid for, dont bitch about the national debt....
