The question is, Why did the auto industry leave? What drove them to move out?

The answer to that is, two things: Government and unions. Government heaped taxes (seeing the auto industry / corporations as nothing more than cash cows) and regulations on them. Then the unions priced their labor far beyond their productivity and profitability.

So, the auto manufacturers left for greener pastures.
