Dan Rather Makes 'Watermelon' Quip in Depicting GOP Attacks on Obama

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, speaking on the GOP's expected strategy against Democrats in elections this fall, said Republicans would describe President Obama as "a nice person ... very articulate" but an ineffective leader who "couldn't sell watermelons if you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic."

Jarods snipped about where Sarah Palin got her healthcare when she was 6 years old but has nothing to say about "watermelon" man....

Rather poor cliche for Rather to use given its racial implications.

I guess I would reluctantly agree....and I do agree with your Eskimo/Space heater statement as well. I just hate that we live in a time when our words have to be so carefully examined. I mean, as much as I don't like Dan Rather's politics, he was just making a point and most likely thought nothing about race in what he said. But now it will be put through the media's "word grinder" and he will somehow be more of a villian for saying it the way he did.

Yup....you gotta watch what you say. Rather's a big boy. He knows what the score is.

I'm with you on this one. I'm no Rather defender but he's used phrases like this his whole career. Yes I know the racial implications of watermelon and black people and yes it's probably best not to use this phrase when mentioning Obama but I still think it's a lot of bs.

Forgive me for going to lunch.

I dont know if he used watermelon because it was connected somehow to black people or not.... But I never understood the connection/insult, whats wrong with liking watermellon, I love watermelon....

It would have been better had he said lemonade.... Geesh, you Republicans are sensative and PC!

LOL... yeah Jarod, go up to some black people and start talking about watermellon and kool aid and start laughing at Republicans and see what type of response you get.

Seriously, what is the great insult in saying someone/some group likes watermellon?

My entire family (except my one sister) loves watermellon....?!?!?

You'll have to look that up yourself. But I am shocked if you really claim you've never heard the black people and watermellon stereotype. It's origin seems like it can be debated but it looks like it might have come from the slave days or sometime just after.

But before you really embarrass yourself or get your *ss kicked you might want to educate yourself on it.

I realize that there is a stereotype that black people like to eat watermelon but I didn't think that meant it is inappropriate to use the word watermelon at all when talking about black people.

I don't see how saying that a black person couldn't sell watermelons with assistance from the highway patrol has anything to do with the stereotype that black people enjoy eating watermelon.

THis can be a fun experiment for you. Walk up to a hundred or so black men and ask them if they like watermelon. Be sure to record your results.

Ive heard it, I just have never understood why it was an insult.
