Disgruntled Democrats join the Tea Party

Grand Junction, Colorado (CNN) -- They are not typical Tea Party activists: A woman who voted for President Obama and believes he's a "phenomenal speaker." Another who said she was a "knee-jerk, bleeding heart liberal."

These two women are not alone.

Some Americans who say they have been sympathetic to Democratic causes in the past -- some even voted for Democratic candidates -- are angry with President Obama and his party. They say they are now supporting the Tea Party -- a movement that champions less government, lower taxes and the defeat of Democrats even though it's not formally aligned with the Republican Party.

lol...the libs ought to have fun with this, can't wait for the insults to fly

I can understand becoming disillusioned with Republicans, but being and describing yourself as a liberal (so apparently she isn't a conservative Democrat) and joining the Tea Party? That just doesn't make sense.

Sure it does, at least if you apply the term to mean a classical liberal, like myself. The more freedom, the better.

It's a mistake to think that "classical" liberalism = libertarianism. And she described herself as a "knee-jerk, bleeding heart liberal". I don't think she meant classical liberal. And most people who are right-wing liberals in the US would just describe themselves as "libertarian" to save themselves the trouble. It's a bit of a thankless fight to attempt to reclaim the term for right-wing liberals when social liberals and social democrats took the term and ran with it for about a century.

I'm honestly not sure the term "liberal" was ever used in a right-wing sense in America. In Europe the liberals were pushed against the wall by Christian Democrats and Socialists, and the parties that represented liberalism were forced to the right (there are a few exceptions) by the circumstances. Most of the big right-wing liberal parties in Europe act little differently than what you'd expect of a generic conservative party.

Self determination is an amazing thing. But you're right, most of the time I go by Libertarian. Most of the people I talk to for the first time about it think they're the same thing though, since they both start out sounding the same.

i don't know about right wing, your definitions are often extreme

however, liberal (from latin meaning free), was a prominent in the early stages of our country and embraced by men such as locke, smith and it stood against fascist regimes....

the term today bears little resemblence to its original meaning, just like political parties nearly

Well, there are "right wing liberals" in Europe who have become indistinguishable from modern conservatives. The underlying 19th century philosophy isn't usually the key thing here, it's just how circumstances molded the party.

The current generation is liberal, the last generation was libertarian. Pure conservatives are definitely on the way out.

It makes perfect sense. Gimmi some gridlck. Liberals don't like Obamas warmongering in Afghanistan and foot dragging in Iraq. We hate his mocking of herb. And he bitched about drunken sailor spending and gave us coke head much worse spending.
