Well, yeah, that's why I said "attempted". I know a couple of people who become extremely put out that nobody else seems to get their attempts at what they think is humor. This guy may be another.

From what I read, it seems he was also trying to refer to a potential harmful draw on the local ecology by adding so many more people to what is now a fragile ecosystem on a tiny island. How familiar he may actually be with these matters is up in the air.

That is a likely cop out in some lame attempt to cover up his ignorance.

Hi Thorn, if you have a chance to see the video it's pretty painful to 1) watch the guy take about a minute to s.l.o.w.l.y. attempt to give this island's demensions (sp) and it seems pretty clear he wasn't trying to make a joke.

We've all said stupid or embarrassing things, this guy just happens to be a member of Congress and it was caught on TV.
 
Jay Leno can't time jokes like that. I saw it too and it was extreemly painful and embarrassing for this guy. How dumb is his base if that's what rose to the top.

I read an article which attempted to say it was a joke. It was political p.r. spin 101. You can imagine this Congressman's p.r. team went into panic mode after hearing the comment made about how they were going to try and spin it.

yeah, I googled and found those articles as well. It was simply an 'oh shit' moment for them and now they are trying to spin as hard as they can. Bottom line... no one watching him speak about the islands size would mistake that for an attempt at a joke.

That was my impression as well, but not having seen the original I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. If the video is that bad, then he has no excuses and no amount of spin will change that.
 
The video is soo bad it's funny. I highly recommend it, unless he's your Congressman an you love the guy.
