Kansas tuberculosis outbreak now largest in US News

Data on the outbreak from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) show that 67 active TB cases and 79 latent cases have been reported since the beginning of 2024 in Wyandotte and Johnson counties, which are part of the greater Kansas City area. Most of the cases have been in Wyandotte County. KDHE says it has been working with local health departments in response to the outbreak and is following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure patients are receiving proper treatment.

"The current Kansas City, Kan. Metro tuberculosis (TB) outbreak is the largest documented outbreak in U.S. history, presently (since the 1950’s, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) started monitoring and reporting TB cases)," KDHE communications director Jill Bronaugh told CIDRAP News in an email. "This outbreak is still ongoing, which means that there could be more cases."

There has been a breakdown in public health, so we will see more and more contagious disease outbreaks. trump and Kennedy have promised a "pause" to fighting contagious diseases, which would mean that any contagious disease would have a free hand to spread.

This could be extremely bad.

Typically in Red states. Hopefully trump will enact closed borders so they keep their diseases to themselves.

No different than the mass casualties in Florida and Texas during Covid. They chose to politicize the basic health precautions and tens of thousands of people died.

Wouldn't be bad if they were all Republicans, but sadly innocents were caught up in the disaster.

Tuberculosis has always been in America, or at least has been here for 300+ years, so not brought here from other countries. There does seem to be some problems with tuberculosis spreading from the USA to Latin America.

While we have been doing a great job in general fighting tuberculosis, we are failing among rural, uneducated white men... Also known as trump voters.

Immigrants are more likely to be vaccinated than Americans, which is a scary fact.

The problem is that some people are very selfish and unwilling to stop infecting others.

The vaccine is a problem. It has some unpleasant side effects, and so should only be administered to those at risk. The problem here too is those at risk in America just refuse. This is why it is tearing through red areas of the country.
