Top al-Qaida leaders killed in Iraq, US says

BAGHDAD – The U.S. and Iraq claimed a major victory against al-Qaida on Monday, saying their forces killed the terror group's two top figures in this country in an air and ground assault on their safehouse near Saddam Hussein's hometown.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced the killings of Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Ayyub al-Masri at a news conference and showed photographs of their bloody corpses. U.S. military officials later confirmed the deaths, which Vice President Joe Biden called a "potentially devastating blow" to al-Qaida in Iraq.

good news....does anyone know what happened to the people who used to say that this only causes 'them' to hate us more?

We should have left after mission accomplished. Anyone cheerleading the war hawking better shut the fuck up about spending.

Again? Wow, another "potentially fatal blow"...

I wonder if those people who hassled Cheney for saying that are going to rush in to hassle The Mouth.

note the use of the word 'potentially'...as long as there are people that believe that they will go to paradise there will be insurgents and more leaders to fill the shoes of the killed off leaders

as for hassled, war is a hassle...

And who said that?

And who said that?

lots of people, it was in the news frequently that our actions in iraq are causing the muslim world to hate us and in fact grow more AQ members...you're playing obtuse and i'm not falling for it

since obama has been in office, i haven't heard a peep about that

You're a real piece o' work, Yurtsie. You're whole raison d'etre is to create hypocrisy where none exists.

Yes. People said the invasion of Iraq caused sentiment against us, and aided terrorist recruiting. Know why? Because one NIE after another said so; one called Iraq a "cause celebre" for terrorist recruitment.

Killing top leaders in Al Qaeda? Well, not the same thing, not by a long shot. Because, if you'll remember, Al Qaeda was ACTUALLY THE GROUP THAT ATTACKED US.

Keep up the faux hypocrisy outrage vigilance.

i knew you were being obtuse, thanks for proving me right yet again

fact is, the whole slant on the war is much more positive since obama took office, to deny that is to deny reality....

The media hardly even covers Iraq anymore. This war has gone on for 7 years now; war fatigue has defined the nation for years now, and the economy has taken over as the #1 issue (for obvious reasons).

When top AQ leaders got killed in the Bush admin, the headlines would be "top AQ leaders killed." Same as Obama. No one ever reported that "they hate us more because we killed the top AQ leaders."

More faux outrage over hypocrisy that simply doesn't exist.

:medit:

chill out onceler, you're such a drama queen....no one is 'outraged'....sorry that pointing out facts has disturbed you so much

Which means the same as "could be" which were the words used by Cheney.

When are people going to be consistent about their beliefs rather than their hypocrisy? (Not you, DQ, just people generally. Like the idiots who cheered Bush's spending.)

We should have left after mission accomplished. Anyone cheerleading the war hawking better shut the fuck up about spending.
Many missions have been accomplished, but the WOT won't be over for a long time.

This is a huge development though, and they killed a third POS late yesterday. AQ's losing their cred, and local folks are turning on them.

Huge victory for George W. Bush. Folks over there will be erecting statues of him and naming their babies after him. :cof1:

And someday George W. Bush will get recognized in the U.S. as making a masterful decision to attack Iraq. Someone, either GW or someone in his cabinet had superior sense to recognize that if there was anyplace in the Mid-East that was capable of sustaining freedom and democracy, Iraq was it. Someday we will all recognize that decision as a truly great decision. And, if freedom in Iraq ultimately puts a spearhead of freedom into the surrounding countries, the whole world shoud applaud GW.

I don't think people have said that all of our actions in Iraq would cause the Muslim world to hate us. I mean, killing actual Al Qaeda members is a good thing, although I think the "cutting of its head" strategy has proved to be total horseshit and that Biden statement is garbage. How many "top leaders" have we killed now? The snake has a hell of a lot of heads.

The things that we do and have done to make people hate us are things like Abu Ghraib, blowing up wedding parties, killing women and children and stuff like this:

None of that helps and does indeed hurt our cause and does indeed make people hate us.

I quick sum-up of Yurt's contribution since joining JPP: "thanks for admitting I was right"/"thanks for proving I was right," "nothing but ad homs from you, you moron," "the media did this to Bush but not to Obama," "hypocrite, hypocrite, hypocrite."

"yawn"

You're such a douche.

are you claiming that wikileaks leak of this video contributed nothing to increased enrollment and attacks....you specifically pointed to the video as an example....

the video, without a doubt, increased knowledge and thus anger of what took place and the edited version seen round the world, was wholly inaccurate and the media often inaccurately portrayed it....to hold wikileak blameless is the height of stupidity
