... Trump is weighing in on a national debate, apparently calling on Congress to make Daylight Saving Time permanent.

"The House and Senate should push hard for more Daylight at the end of a day. Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks, a big inconvenience and, for our government, A VERY COSTLY EVENT!!!" the president declared Friday morning in a post on Truth Social.

Senators debated the annual changes between Daylight Saving Time and Standard time during a hearing Thursday.

I would totally get behind this. Stop the clock changes now... Just leave the danged clocks alone and keep them where they are at now.

Why do autocrats always want to make Daylight Saving Time permanent? It seems to be a bad idea:

"Those who have to work early, or who live in the westernmost parts of time zones, feel these effects more acutely. A study of people living on opposite ends of the same time zone estimated that the shift to daylight saving meant a loss for westerners of about 19 minutes of shut-eye a night. They are more likely to be overweight and to earn less than those to the east. And a small study suggests that teenagers, who are already burdened with a delay in their circadian rhythm thanks to puberty, lose 32 minutes of sleep owing to Daylight Saving Time. No wonder they are so moody."

Making daylight saving time permanent means moving everyone to the West of their time zone permanently. That has a bad effect. The best decision, according to the data, would be to get rid of daylight saving time completely. There are energy savings arguments against that, but as people get more expensive, and energy gets cheaper, those are fading.

Putin moved to permanent daylight savings time. Other autocrats have also. What is the good in making a slight problem worse?

You do know they can set time to start school, work, etc. later, right?

The stupid idea that moving the clocks around "creates more daylight" is idiotic. Just keep the clocks where they are, change your schedule rather than everybody's clocks, this "solution" was idiotic from the beginning.

In your version of the world the sun would be up at 5AM in the summer time, that would suck.

Well Putin can, he runs a totalitarian government. Can trump?

It saved money by not wasting sunlight that was around early in the morning. The cost of lighting has come down, so it appears to be a good idea who is no longer a good idea.

In the real world, some places the sun does not set at all during the summer time. There is no magic solution to that.

Nonsense. Clocks setting doesn't save any time or do anything at all.

Only white morons think that cutting an inch of the bottom of a blanket and sewing it to the top creates a longer blanket.

You are literally just changing the schedule of everyone because of your totalitarianism. Everyone must make you happy.

And in those places they regulate their lives according to the clock, just as we can do if we stop changing the fricking times to make your stupid idea continue to regulate our lives simply because you do not like change.

If clock setting is unimportant, as you now claim, why waste our time with this whole thread?

The reality is that moving an hour of sunlight in the summer from the morning to the evening, saves a little energy, but at the cost of a little sleep, which does a little health damage. This are all minor effects, but when energy was more expensive, daylight saving time was probably worth it. Now that lighting is cheaper, it probably makes more sense to not have daylight saving time.

You are literally just changing the schedule of everyone because of your totalitarianism.
Daylight savings time is totalitarianism? No it is not. It is a nudge. We all have the power to set our own schedules, but the official time becomes a nudge.

Everyone must make you happy.
The government is supposed to set standards. No one has to follow those standards, but it is good for our society to have standards that if people want to follow they can.

And in those places they regulate their lives according to the clock, just as we can do if we stop changing the fricking times to make your stupid idea continue to regulate our lives simply because you do not like change.
You seem very upset with the industrial revolution.

Because in this most Americans can find agreement. Very few think we shouldn't fix the time either pre or post time change...

While I personally prefer DST because the sun won't be up at 5 AM in the summertime and we can simply start work later year round to make up for the darker mornings in the wintertime I wouldn't hate stopping during standard time either and not changing from there and would prefer it to the status quo. Very few Americans think we should keep the time changes going on in perpetuity. The vast majority of us think they should end.

Changing the clocks is exactly as totalitarian as not changing the clocks. In one we do it to make you happy, in the other we stop doing it to make most other folks that are not you happy. Neither option is really totalitarian, that is just your own words that I simply "used against you", I find most folks like to have their own words used in the conversation it helps them understand.

Most of us do not like changing the clocks and studies have shown that especially in "fall back" there is negative side effects in human health. While I have a preference for stopping on DST (so summer days wouldn't begin at 5 AM) I would prefer stopping on standard time to continuing this total nonsense of "saving" daylight by changing clocks.

So you want us to set the clocks an hour later... And then work an hour later year round to make up for it? Reseting every schedule in our society, because you do not like the sun to be out at 5:00 AM? But the sun will still be out earlier than you want, due to our new schedules.

Setting everything an hour later means that we will still have the slight health problems of less sleep during the summer, but would add onto it the problems of having to try to wakeup in the Winter in darkness. Plus, the problems of having children go to school in darkness, which will cause deaths.

I would prefer for us to leave the clocks where they are right now and not set the clocks back or forward from here on out, and have a second preference to set the clocks "back" one more time and leave it there. Either way, leave the danged clocks alone and folks can adjust their schedules accordingly.

And no, we do not have "slight health problems" from the "spring forward", from the studies I have seen we do when we "lose an hour" and snap them back in the fall, and just start school one hour later. It won't even be changing when they start. It's again idiotic to pretend that you have made the day longer or shorter by changing the clocks. Simply set the start time for work or school an hour later and leave it there or, conversely if that is the "hill" you want to die on, just wake up earlier in the summer as the sun rises at 5 AM and leave the clocks on standard time.

Pick one and stay there is what I would like. And if you are picking my preference is for DST rather than Standard Time. We've adjusted long enough for stupid ideas like "saving daylight", the daylight doesn't change.

The basic problem is we live further from the equator than where we evolved to live, maybe we should all just move closer to the equator(THAT IS A JOKE!!!)

I would prefer for us to leave the clocks where they are right now and not set the clocks back or forward from here on out, and have a second preference to set the clocks "back" one more time and leave it there.
There is a slight health reason to leave us on Winter time. There is a bigger health and safety reason to not leave us on Summer time. So I agree with you on the first one, but disagree with you on the second one.

How do you feel about leap seconds?

And no, we do not have "slight health problems" from the "spring forward", from the studies I have seen we do when we "lose an hour" and snap them back in the fall, and just start school one hour later.
It causes a bit less sleep, and that causes a slight bit of loss of health. It also saves us on lighting, but that is less important these days, lighting is cheap.

None of this is going to make a massive change in our lives, but every little bit helps.

It's again idiotic to pretend that you have made the day longer or shorter by changing the clocks.
Nobody is pretending that. What daylight saving time does is make more of the daylight during the hours we are awake. There is a problem that people are trying to go to sleep while there is sunlight, and therefore are less likely to sleep.

I hate trump and his supporters so much....my kids 401K's are being decimated...with no end in sight. China is secretly trying to distance itself from the US and guys when that happens...all hell will ring loose on this country....

FINALLY Trump MAY do something good for the American people.
Trump hasn't done shit so far for the American people he put tariffs on everything we buy driving costs of just about everything we buy UP, Driving us into another Republican driven recession / Depression that the next Demarcate President will have to get us out of just like all the recessions we have had in the last 60 plus years.
YES this may be the first and only good thing Trump has EVER done for the AMERICAN people.

I'm for getting rid of it rather than making it permanent year round. The last thing we need in Phoenix is more daylight...

View attachment 47790Most of the federal workers let go, were veterans and MINORITES...the plan for Medicaid cuts, is to again harm minorities....what they will find soon... A WHOLE LOT OF WHITE FOLK IS ON IT TOO, BUT ESPECIALLY IN THESE PISS POOR REPUBLICAN RED STATES.
Veterans? Really? 6.2% of the US population right now are veterans. If we assume that veterans and minorities made up say, 60% of those fired, and veterans made up just a third of that (20%), they'd be overrepresented by triple their numbers in the general population. So, I call bullshit on your post.
