Walmart, Target CEOs privately warned Trump tariffs could lead to empty shelves soon

The chief executives of Walmart and Target privately warned President Trump this week that his sweeping tariff policy could disrupt supply chains and lead to empty shelves in the coming weeks, sources familiar with the White House meeting told CBS News.

The CEO of Home Depot was also present at Monday's closed-door meeting. Axios was first to report on the retail executives' warnings to Mr. Trump.

Target and Walmart declined to comment on the specific warnings.

Following their meeting with Mr. Trump on Monday, both companies did issue statements.

"We had a productive meeting with President Trump and his team and appreciated the opportunity to share our insights," Walmart said in a statement.

The scale and speed of the flip-flopping, retreating, and backtracking is a sight to behold.

And now we will have to deal with the law of supply and demand on top of Trumps tariffs.
So prices of things will be going up even more because the supply will be going down.
The supply of things we want and need will be going down and prices going up and as I said before I wouldn't put it past companies to add a few extra percent to that increase to pad their bottom line.
Trump doesn't know shit about the economy and it will be hurting the average American in the pocketbook.
Time will tell.

Prices will go up even as the shelves start to empty. Except for toilet paper, what does the US make that doesn't rely upon international trade for components or materials?

Agreed on Trump. Elon is recognizing the monster he's created and seeking to bail out while he can.

YEP Trump's tariffs have already effected some goods.
But as I said the law of supply and demand will also drive up the price of a lot of things we need.
Trump has started a real shit show and all we can do for now is sit back and pay the higher prices.

No disagreement there. The $64 Question is "What will Trump do about it?" He's made it clear he doesn't give a shit about American citizens per se, but he does care about his popularity.

Well we all know he doesn't give a shit about his MAGA followers he came right out and told them that , and he only wanted their vote and money.
And if he doesn't give a shit about his followers you can bet he doesn't give a shit about all the rest of the American people.

Which is why it mystifies me so many JPP MAGAts still follow him. Most, it appears, are elderly and either demented or suffering from some other cognitive impairment.

Nah, Trump’s already caving on his tariffs, between this meetings, Wall Street, and the Fed firing debacle, he had to backtrack

It may be possible that Trump's repeated blowing up the economy will end. The investors and corporations are tiring of his hot flashes, resulting in them changing their plans 3 times a week. The wealthy are talking to him. Companies are sick of him. Trading partners are planning on going without us.

I was warning here at JPP at least two years ago that Americans' standard of living will continue to decline, in fact almost certainly will plummet.

It is all coming true.

I heard on my grapevine yesterday the claim that going all the way back to Clinton an active decision was taken to lower our standard of living for the good of the Imperial Empire. That is was shipping jobs overseas was all about.

If we dont have jobs then we are dependent upon the government for survival......the New Slavers are all in favor of that.

I warned the Trumpys that Trump is stupid and unqualified for the presidency. He is proving that so clearly that Trumpies are leaving the Trump train. He does not know a damn thing about economics. He does not respect the separation of powers, the Constitution or the work our agencies- do. He seems to be taking power from the defense department, the judicial system and the Republican party. He is trying to take those powers for himself. He may have accomplished that, but he is too stupid and too lazy to utilize those powers. We are floundering in his attempts.
