WOW: The iPad Is Destroying The Netbook Business

Philip Elmer-Dewitt picks up an amazing chart from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. The chart shows what has happened to netbook sales since the announcement and introduction of the iPad:


Netbooks, you'll recall, were by far the fastest-growing segment of the PC market. Everyone was ga-ga about Netbooks. Apple was getting griped about for refusing to offer a netbook (because it couldn't make one that it didn't think sucked).


Well, now all that has changed, at least temporarily. In April, the month the iPad was released, netbook sales barely grew.


This is bad news for non-Apple computer makers. It's also bad news for Microsoft.

yeah, I don't have a bunch. But when I heard next gen Iphone will have video chat I figured I'd get in before the release and try for a small gain over the summer.

I own AT&T too for the dividend, they are spending billions upgrading the network.

Yup. But the 'droid is a nice interim device. I recommend it. I haven't found anything I wanted it to do that it doesn't do and the iPhone does. (I don't use speakerphone so I don't care if I can surf and talk on the web, and that isn't a phone limitation, it's a network limitation.)

I know that I, for one, have decided to not buy an Ipad instead of not buying a netbook......

I already bought one and it way better than a laptop or netbook. I'll sell the stock again just short of $300.

During iPad’s announcement earlier this year Free Software Foundation hired a Steve Jobs look-alike (attempted) actor outside the event to express what they think about Apple’s closed platform model. At that time, most of us might have laughed it off. But in light of recent Apple announcement, rules putting more restrictions on an already heavily controlled platform, this seems very appropriate.
