Most of the MAGA base is not actually hostile to Democratic economic policies. In fact, most of them rely on the social welfare state and regulated capitalism liberals built.

I think a big reason Democrats are losing the Midwestern and Appalachian states that we used to routinely win is because we allowed others to define us in terms of transgender athletes participating in NCAA women's sports, and with a strict secular atheism that is derisive of Christianity.

People in Michigan and Pennsylvania tend to be economically left-of-center but culturally right-of-center, and they are going to vote on values as much as they vote on policies.

That's EXACTLY what I don't understand.

I'm considerably left of center economically,
and culturally well to the right of "woke" Democrats,
but I would never dream of voting against my own economic best interests
the way that the people you've mentioned do.

I blame some of it on these people being afflicted
with corrosive religious superstitions.

This was a major failure of the founders.
They opted for freedom OF religion, a stupid mistake in retrospect.
Freedom FROM religious influence on the laws of the land
should have been clearly stipulated instead.

The better Ron Reagan pointed that out on national TV ads.

Biden has stage 5 and a Gleason score of 9. Most oncologist and urologists say it is unlikely that this is a newly discovered cancer. If you are getting picky about detail at least be accurate yourself.

You've got Trump on the campaign trail claiming he doesn't know anything about Project 25, and pledging to never cut Medicare, Medicaid, Social security.

And voilà, you suddenly have the makings of a candidate who claims they will protect the liberal social welfare state, while also supposedly being sympathetic to traditional Midwestern and Appalachian cultural values.
