Trump appears to have another mental fumble and critics pounce: ‘He should be in an assisted living facility’
The president created a social media stir with a confusing statement on Wednesday.

Donald Trump’s brutal month of cognitive fumbles continued on Wednesday with a stunning statement that … well, folks now seem convinced that the president either forgot what the Declaration of Independence is or never really knew what it was to begin with.
How did folks come to the conclusion?
Well, Trump spoke in the Oval Office Wednesday, fielding questions about the potential of war with Iran.
“I like to make the final decisions one second before it’s due, you know, ‘cause things change,” he said. “I mean, especially with war, things change with war. It can go from one extreme to the other.
“War’s bad,” he added. “There was no reason for this to be a war. There was no reason for Russia, Ukraine. A lot of wars, there was no reason for.’
And that is when Trump went and created a social media stir.
“You look right up there,” he said pointing at the wall where the Declaration of Indepence is displayed. “I don’t know. You see the Declaration of Independence, and I say, I wonder if you know the Civil War always seemed to me maybe that could have been solved without losing 600,000 plus people.”
The Declaration of Impendence proclaimed America’s independence from England. It led to the Revolutionary War that ran from 1775 to 1783. It had nothing to do with the Civil War, which ran from 1861 to 1865.
Trump’s critics pounced.
“DEMENTIA ALERT — Trump thinks the Declaration of Independence was written around the time of the Civil War,” Tom Joseph wrote on X. “What more do people need to see? He should be in an assisted living facility.”
“Y’all — Trump thinks the Declaration of Independence was signed after 600,000 died in the Civil War,” The Tennessee Holler wrote on X.
“Time for Jake Tapper to write another book” Spencer Hakimian wrote on X.
“Does … does he think the Declaration of Independence was because the South declared independence from the North?” Brian Tyler Cohen wrote.
There were plenty more comments like that as folks tried to figure out just what exactly the president was thinking. It comes amid a string of mental mistakes by Trump that his critics have not missed, especially considering Trump’s knack for hitting Joe Biden on the subject of the former president’s cognitive state during his final days in office.
Trump actually stumbled into June coming off a late May speech at West Point that somehow wandered into the subject of trophy wives and got his opponents going.
“I don’t think that those who have gone through West Point expected to have their commander in chief address them and start talking about trophy wives or start talking how he has so many investigations,” Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a major Trump foe, told MSNBC. “What a great reminder that you are not qualified to be the person that potentially will command troops to go into war. This is not instilling confidence whatsoever.
“It’s time for Republicans to start calling him out and start questioning his mental acuity, and whether or not he is equipped to serve mentally,” she added. “We know when it comes down to his criminality, he is not qualified to serve, but this is absolutely deplorable.”
That was followed by at least one expert speaking out about the president’s communication patterns.
“His lack of focus makes it seem as though he’s experiencing cognitive decline, that his brain is not well-disciplined, and he’s unable to maintain a thought and carry it through a logical conclusion,” Dr. Jennifer R. Mercieca, a professor of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University, said.
“Trump sees himself as someone who is unscripted and not teleprompted,” she added. “He likes to brand himself as a ‘truthteller’ who can and will say anything that comes to mind.
“Unfortunately, that makes his speeches difficult to follow as he digresses from thought to thought, seemingly connecting ideas at random.”
Trump then closed out that month in wild fashion on May 31 by resharing a post on his Truth Social platform that claimed Biden was executed in 2020 and replaced by clones.
“Donald Trump, more detached from reality than ever, just shared an unhinged QAnon post saying former President Biden was executed in 2020 and replaced by clones,” the Meidas Touch account on X wrote.
“If Joe Biden posted something like this Hannity would be roused from his sleep to anchor special coverage,” Aaron Rupar wrote on X. “But Trump posts (expletive) conspiracy theories and the mainstream press yawns. His craziness has been completely normalized.”
“Trump posts on Truth Social a post that say Joe Biden was executed in 2020, and clones and robots are what you have seen since,” one account on X wrote while resharing a screen shot of the president’s post. “Yes, this is a real Trump post!”
Then June began and the president nearly fell while climbing the stairs to board Air Force One. That is something that Biden was caught on film doing several times during his presidency, and the right didn’t let it slide. So, of course, Trump’s critics ran with it.
“Donald Turmp almost face planted while walking up the stairs of Air Force One,” Harry Sisson wrote on X. “Using MAGA logic, that must mean he’s incompetent and mentally declining! We must demand an investigation ASAP!”
“This old man is falling apart mentally AND physically,” JoJoFromJerz wrote on X. “Sad.”
“Where is Tapper and Thompson?!” Jaime Harrison wrote. “I demand Axios coverage on the type of shoes Trump is wearing! Do they have the Anonymous sources queuing? We want a cognitive test right now and wall to wall CNN coverage!”
“When Joe Biden did stuff like this, Fox would play the clips over and over like it was as significant as the moon landing,” Aaron Rupar wrote.
“Time to get Old Man Trump fitted for a wheelchair,” Ron Filipkowski wrote.
“BREAKING NEWS: a clearly physically impaired Trump struggles to ascend Air Force One big stairs!” the Angry Staffer account on X wrote. “What are they hiding about the President’s health?”
Luckily, the president was able to catch himself on the way down or things could have been much worse. Also, Marco Rubio also seemed to misstep and nearly fall at a higher point on the steps while boarding after Trump. So, it was not just him.
That didn’t matter to his critics.
There was more to pick at, too, and those opportunities were not wasted.
Trump spoke at Fort Bragg on June 10 and took it upon himself to dig at Biden’s brain, and … well, he did not stick the landing.
“I’ve known this guy for a long time,” Trump said. “He was never the sharpest bulb.”
That, of course, is not the appropriate saying. It’s not the “brightest bulb” or not the “sharpest tool in the shed,” and the fact that Trump somehow came up with a mix of the two did not escape folks on social media.
“He wasn’t the brightest knife in the drawer either,” the Machine Pun Kelly account wrote on X while sharing video of Trump’s fumble.
“Sharpest bulb?” Alex Granger wrote. “Trump’s brain is not well.”
“Trump just described Biden as ‘not the sharpest bulb,’ in case you needed reminding that Trump himself is incapable of coherent thought,” another wrote.
“Trump says Biden was ‘never the sharpest bulb,’ because that’s definitely the saying,” another wrote.
“wtf is a sharp bulb?” another person wrote. “This is the dumbest dude on the planet.”
Trump was then stumped by a softball question when heading in to see “Les Misérables” at the Kennedy Center.
“I’ve seen it, we’ve seen it a number of times,” Trump said. “It’s fantastic.”
The president was then asked if he identified more with Jean Valjean or Javert.
“That’s a tough one,” Trump said. “The last part of that question, that’s tough, I think.”
The president then looked to Melania Trump.
“You better answer that one honey,” he said. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?” “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert said while showing the clip on his show. “Javert is the bad guy! You just said you’ve see the show a number of times. Is that number zero?”
Colbert was not done having fun at Trump’s expense.
“It is possible Trump doesn’t remember who the characters are because his brain is wet bread,” he said.
And all of that came as the president sparred with California Governor Gavin Newsom over anti-ICE protests in the state. Trump sent in the National Guard, and Newsom made some alarming claims about how it all played out.
Newsom claimed Thursday that Trump fabricated details of a call they had before the president activated the Guard.
“(Trump) starts making up all these things he claimed he told me about, which honestly starts to disturb me on a different level, that maybe he actually believes he said those things and he’s not all there,” Newsom said. “I mean it.
“He literally, a few days later … claimed he had another conversation with me,” Newsom said.
“On my mother and dad’s grave, and I don’t mess around when I say this, he lied,” Newsom added. “Don’t think for a second he told the truth.”
Unlike the other instances that is more of a Newsom-said/Trump-said argument so it is not as clear cut.
