China is being ambigous on the straits of Hormuz. But they would be hurt a lot if the straits were closed. The price of oil would go up and the majority of China's oil comes through the straits of Hormuz. If Iran close the Straits they could not export oil either.

The FBI interviewer that interviewed Saddam said he pretended to have WMD because he thought if the US thought he had WMDs then Iran would also think he had WMDs and he had just fought a multi year war with the Iranian. He was very afraid of Iran. He thought the UN would stop the US from doing anything. The bluff backfired on Saddam when Bush attacked Iraq alone without UN support.
