There was a time when presidents stayed out of court cases in public. The presidency, even with an idiot like Trump in charge, is very powerful and can impact a court case. When Manson was charged, Ford was careful to not say he was guilty. A presidential statement of innocence or guilt can find its way into the trial. Other presidents were aware of that.
