It's Trump to the rescue during attack

He's faster than a spending Marla, able to raise tall buildings with a single loan. He's Donald Trump, crime fighter, who jumped from his limousine to rescue a man from a bat-wielding attacker. Trump, his companion Marla Maples and another couple were headed to New Jersey on Monday for a Paula Abdul concert. As they approached the Lincoln Tunnel under the Hudson River, they saw the assault taking place, Trump said Wednesday.

Trump said he asked his driver to pull over.

"I wasn't thinking about what might happen," he said. "I got out, and the man recognized me. He stopped hitting the other man, and said "Mr. Trump, I didn't do anything wrong.' Then he dropped the bat and ran. It was more than a little bit strange."

The beating had attracted a crowd, but most were just standing around without going to the aid of the victim, Trump said.

"I was most disappointed that so many people were watching it, but nobody was doing anything," Trump said, adding he left the scene after "somebody who looked like a doctor" went to the victim's aid.

The victim also left quickly. A police spokesman said the officers called to the scene filed no report because the participants were both gone when they arrived.

The incident hit close to home for Trump. His mother was mugged three weeks ago and a bystander ran down her alleged assailant. Mary Trump, 79, was released from Booth Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.

"I know his mother was on his mind," a spokeswoman for Trump said.
