Trump Putin summit

Trump, who for years has balked at American support for Ukraine and expressed admiration for Putin, had pledged confidently to bring about an end to the war on his first day back in the White House. Seven months later, after berating Zelenskyy in the Oval Office and stanching the flow of some U.S. military assistance to Kyiv, Trump could not bring Putin even to pause the fighting, as his forces make gains on the battlefield.

The U.S. president had offered Putin both a carrot and a stick, issuing threats of punishing economic sanctions on Russia while also extending a warm welcome at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, but he appeared to walk away without any concrete progress on ending the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year.

Instead, he handed Putin long-sought recognition on the international stage, after years of Western efforts to make him a pariah over the war and his crackdown on dissent, and forestalled the threat of additional U.S. sanctions.

In a sign that the conversations did not yield Trump’s preferred result, the two leaders ended what was supposed to be a joint news conference without taking questions from reporters.

During a subsequent interview with Fox News Channel before leaving Alaska, Trump insisted that the onus going forward might be somehow on Zelenskyy “to get it done

So not a shock!

Trump is like a pretend dom, too ignorant to know that the educated see right through his cheap theatrics.

Education was always the way out.

He should have read some books.

Now we know just how useless Trump's Alaska summit really was ... to everyone but Vladimir Putin
Before President Trump's tête-à-tête with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, press secretary Karoline Leavitt was already downplaying the stakes.

Wednesday morning, she described the summit as a "listening exercise" — which is, frankly, a relief. After all, when you're a time-poor autocrat juggling a Monday invasion, a midweek labor camp opening, and a weekend of jailing political opponents, it's easy to feel unheard.

Sure, Putin invaded Ukraine. And yes, countless people have suffered ... on both sides. But perhaps — and I think we can all agree this is the real tragedy here — no one has taken the time to validate his feelings.

So it was heartening, then, to see Vlad and Donald touch down on Alaskan soil midday Friday and greet each other with warmth: a smattering of applause from Trump, a weirdly prolonged handshake, and then the two friends sliding into the same back seat — a notable break in protocol — for the drive to their meeting.

Therein lies the entire issue. Trump is brittle and easily manipulated; Putin talks him round again and again. Trump leaves those conversations utterly convinced of both Putin’s integrity and his own genius. Then Putin goes on dropping bombs and killing people. It’s a familiar story that’s played out not just in Russia, and that we can expect to play out anywhere where there’s a strongman leader with a penchant for basic flattery.

Agree, the Russian economy is a mess and Putin understands clearly what awaits him and his country if he opposes a ceasefire.

President Trump means business when it involves stopping the killing.
Simple minded and gullible

The Imperial Empire has no cards.

This is the point you should focus upon.

Will there be a cease fire?

Not for now. However, I think that the summit was helpful when considering the long game. Below are 2 articles on the summit written by authors I trust:

Quoting from the conclusion from the article above:

Simply hilarious getting to watch the press squirm and spin. The sad fact is that the Western establishment is so infected with an intense hatred of Putin and Russia that they are incapable of actually listening to what Putin said. Kelly Anne Conway, for example, disgraced herself by ridiculing President Putin for mentioning the importance of Orthodox Christianity as part of Russian culture.

The next meeting, if there is one, will be in Moscow… probably in late September or early October. I anticipate that the weekend news cycle will be consumed with howls of outrage from most of the European leaders and from Zelensky and his crew. This is nothing more than impotence-fueled frustration.

Quoting Simplicius' conclusion regarding the meeting from the article above:

All in all I still think the meeting was a great step in US-Russian relations for many other reasons apart from Ukraine. The simple fact of open dialogue and slow-building bonhomie is well worth it after an era of no dialogue and open hostility under the likes of Biden and Obama.

We can only assume where things left off is that Trump now knows first hand precisely what Russia’s immutable demands are, and he needs to find a way to somehow package them into an acceptable form for Ukraine and Europe. The problem is, this is impossible, so for now Trump is stuck playing evasion games and hoping to buy time until the situation on the ground is more amenable, i.e. Zelensky gets desperate, or is altogether ousted.

But we’ll have to wait and see what future statements bring, as the Russian side has yet to make any definitive statements of their own about the meeting.

Lastly, for those of you who voted in the recent poll that Trump would ‘kick the can down the road’, using the meeting as a way to save himself from his own self-imposed ‘sanctions’ trap, it seems you were right. Asked about whether he would still sanction Russia, Trump replied:
“Well, because the meeting went so well, we don’t have to think about that now.”

Putin wouldn't even take biden's phone call

Not true, but if it was, it's because Putin knew he couldn't flatter and schmooze Biden the way he does your #MalignantMessiah.

trump will once again stare adoringly at Putin, and nothing will change. They will agree that Ukraine must meet Putin's demands, and Zelenskyy will tell both of them to fuck off.

One interesting issue is that U.S/Ukraine minerals agreement. Zelenskyy backed trump into a corner where he will now be forced to protect his new bounty.

Good point. Zelenskyy plays 3D chess while Trump thinks he's playing Candy Land and "winning."

Trump is so easily manipulated by foreign leaders. What an embarrassment for America.
