Ignorance and the Bible

It is quite humorous that those who are the most ignorant on the Bible are those who profess to be Bible thumping Christians. The scholars, people who actually STUDY the Bible for a living, are mostly atheists. And they became atheists only AFTER their deep study led them to that conclusion.

If the Bible stories that defy all laws of science and nature were written today, by an author we could actually talk to about his veracity, we would label it as science fiction.

But, since it was written by several unknown authors 2000 years ago, the believers take it as fact. Delusional. Willfully ignorant. Intellectually lazy.

Too many people lack the ability to think critically.

For me my transition to atheism came after years of self-reflection but definitely when I set out to read the Bible from cover to cover I came to realize that the primary source document had some theological "issues" (not even to mention the historical hit-or-miss aspect or the scientifically bankrupt aspect, but those were easy enough to dismiss as "allegorical" or "metaphorical")

The difference between approaching the Bible as just another bunch of old scrolls cobbled together and approaching it as the key document of all humanity is down to whether someone told you it was the critical document of all humanity. There is nothing within it that indicates deeper insight that couldn't be garnered through non-supernatural means. There's every aspect of human-fingerprints all over it. A vituperative god who acts like a human in one part of the document and then is all-loving and beyond understanding in another, flawed history, made-up just-so stories to explain otherwise normal things, fantasy stories and some good advice mixed in with bad advice.

I'm not Christian, so I have no reason to take anything written in the bible as fact just because it's in there. That being said, I've recently come to believe that while I certainly don't trust anything in there to be fact by default, it may well have been talking about very interesting things that did happen but were distorted due to various reasons. I really found Zecharia Sitchin's theories to be quite interesting. I don't know how much of what he believed is true, but it certainly got me thinking. The creator of the well known youtube channel The Why Files made a great video on his conclusions, which can be seen here:

Agree. I have read parts of New Testament in the original Greek. More I learned about Christianity the more I thought it was pure idiocy.

You read Greek? Interesting. What are your favorite Greek writings? Lots of wisdom to be gleaned from ancient writings. Good to find a fellow seeker.

back to ignore you piece of shit
Your choice. It's your life to live. I advise taking a few risks in your personal life. Nothing weird. Something simple such as sitting next to someone you like and saying, "Are you using that salt shaker?"

Among the best advice people who I respected was this: "Take more risks"

The advice being that we can't learn as much or as fast if we keep avoiding mistakes. By taking risks and making mistakes, even if just small ones, we learn and grow.

Taking a risk can be seen both professionally and spiritually, such as a leap of faith.

Domer, I am not really sure what you mean when you say that they became "atheists." When I have discussed this in the past there were three schools of thought offered:

a) It means they no longer "believe" there is a God...and only that.
b) It means they now "believe" there are no gods.
c) It means they now "believe" it is more likely that there are no gods than that there is at least one.

Reading this seems to indicate that you mean either (b) or (c) above.

Is that what your research indicates for the "scholars" you are citing?

No thinking person should be reading the Bible as work of science or history.

It is a collection of parables, stories, poems, allegory, metaphors, rules, sprinkled periodically with some elements of historical narrative.

(A) is the only rational approach to atheism.

(B) is logically impossible to prove (you can't prove a universal negative like "There is no God", he could be hiding somewhere, so that's out)

(C) Seems little more than a restatement of the first with the addition of "belief" thrown in. I'd prefer this one be eliminated.

Basically it leaves as the primary definition a lack of belief. Nothing more. (I know there are some atheists who take the (B) approach but I fundamentally disagree with them since it involves proving a universal negative which is impossible to prove.)

Just like I don't believe in the little people in the wilds of Iceland. They may very well be there as Bjork claims, but I've seen no evidence and as such feel quite comfortable in simply not believing the claim.

It is not a matter of faith that I don't believe in these things, it is because no valuable reason to believe in them has been presented. And that which can be presented without evidence can be easily dismissed.

Agreed on the various options.

Atheists include Buddhists to puff up their numbers like anti-gun folks claim suicides are "gun violence" to quadruple their numbers.

Just because a person doesn't take the Bible as Gospel (pun intended) doesn't mean they are atheists or even agnostics. Speaking of which, most of those who @gmark77 is referencing are better classified as agnostics.

Thanks to the work of Zecharia Sitchin and others who found his research to be interesting, I disagree. Now, I fully admit that it looks like Zecharia Sitchin got some things wrong. But as the old saying goes, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are a lot of points he's made that are definitely worth thinking about. I believe that The Why Files certainly brings up a lot of these points in the video I linked to previously. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it can be seen here:

no.

the atheists are trained in ignoring the positive aspects of religion,

and instead focusing on the divisive or dismissive aspects.

anything but morality,,, that's what the self appointed masonic/noahide gatekeepers adhere to.

Agreed, but young atheists and conspiracy theorist nutjobs push it as science or history to set up a strawman argument. It's not very smart and intelligent adults can see right through their ploy, but that's how they roll.

As Dean Wormer said, "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son".

Organized religion is all about control. Stray from the company line and you’re branded an outsider. Or worse yet, a heretic of some sort.

Unlike church dogma that theists follow, atheists aren’t “trained” in anything. Most, like myself, come to their conclusions about gods, especially the Christian god, after considerable study and introspection. Very much different than those who are indoctrinated into a particular religion before they are old enough to think on their own.

You’re a Christian, right? That’s because you were born in a Christian setting. You’d be Muslim or Jewish or whatever being born in those environments. It’s no coincidence that one’s religion is almost always defined on their place of birth.
