Oh, another example is the American Civil War.

The United States has never suffered a civil war. The so-called 'Civil War' wan't a civil war. It was a war between two nations.

Half the nation (13 states) quit and wanted to form their own country. The union, and War Department (now DoD), went to war and invaded the Confederacy with the intent of crushing it. The Union states didn't need defending in the beginning of that war and if the Union had done nothing there wouldn't have been a war at all. The Confederacy would simply have been a new nation and that would be that. In purely a defensive act, the War Department and Union needed do nothing to defend the remaining loyal US states other than possibly guard the new border.

Like I said. The CSA WAS a new nation, made up of States that seceded from the USA.
