President Donald Trump on Sunday bragged that his golden remake of the Oval Office and other parts of the White House is causing visitors, including world leaders, to “freak out” when they gaze upon it.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has been putting his personal stamp on the White House, including stepping up the use of gold decorations.
“Some of the highest quality 24 Karat Gold used in the Oval Office and Cabinet Room of the White House,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Foreign Leaders, and everyone else, ‘freak out’ when they see the quality and beauty. Best Oval Office ever, in terms of success and look!!! President DJT”
He also posted a video showing gold decor destined for the White House walls.
While the White House has said Trump paid for the makeover himself, the boast comes as food prices rise at their fastest monthly rate in nearly three years, according to USA Today, with beef and coffee hitting record highs despite Trump’s promise to cut grocery prices on “day one.”
It comes amid a push for austerity that has led to massive cuts in federal programs for medical research, education, food, clean energy, and health care, as well as cuts in the federal workforce.
And the boast also comes as the federal government teeters on the brink of a shutdown that could see mass firings of government workers and an economic toll of billions.
Despite this environment, the president has pushed ahead with renovations in and around the White House, including a planned new ballroom that will be significantly larger than the White House residence itself.
