PTSD is a mental illness. My dad had it too. Mostly after his second tour in Vietnam. He was the X0 then CO of an Army aviation squadron and lost a few people plus had the shit scared out of himself a few times too. He never sought treatment since he'd lived with it for about over 20 years before it was recognized as a psychological issue. As the Mayo Clinic link mentions, it comes in four types and varies by the individual.

Bigotry against Jews has been culturally induced for a couple of millennia. Germans only came from the 20th century's two world wars.
Culture seems to be very difficult and time-consuming to change. Racial bias in the US being an example. The longer it's been in the culture, the longer it seems to be to eliminate.
