A good write up on the BP Horizon disaster

That is an excellent article, it should be required reading.

I would agree.... it was a fairly balanced article that detailed the miscues and blatant mistakes that led up to the Horizon disaster.

Unfortunately with nine pages of reading, that exceeds the reading comprehension capacities for many members of this board. For some ADD sets in around paragraph two, for others it is just too much work and then we also have to be aware of the group that is quite simply made up of future Darwin award winners.

It's not odd at all that BP had several options to go saftey vs money and they neglected saftey at nearly every possible turn.

BP has hundreds of violations compared only a few at other oil companies...but that fact doesn't get in the way of tom's bizarre and obsessive defense of BP

I heard the other day BP is responsible for 95% of the complaints at refineries. Those stupid Brits need to be banned, sell of thier assets.

It is also hard to see what difference an acoustically activated mechanism would have made, given that the blind shear ram failed even when they tried activating it directly from an ROV.. Here is an interesting testimony from the 17th June hearings.

Documents discussed during congressional hearings June 17, 2010, suggested that a battery in the device's control pod was flat and that the rig's owner, Transocean, may have modified Cameron's equipment for the Macondo site which increased the risk of BOP failure, in spite of warnings from their contractor to that effect.

What amazes me is that article states they were getting ready to cap it and wrap it up for now in April and THAT is when they decided to cut many corners. If you are THAT close, why would you risk fucking it up.

I suppose that just goes to show how short sighted so many companies are. So much focus on 'quarterly numbers' and not enough on the long term.

Very similar to our politicians... always focused on the short term promises and not the long term consequences...

BP is hardly 'British'... it is a multinational just like every other major player in the oil industry. I know Obama is trying to paint this as a 'foreign' problem, but I think you are smart enough to see through that line of BS....

so enough of the Brit bashing...

RIG sounds like it has a big hand in the events that led to this fuck up as well.

But it's not just at that last phase that they cut corners. The whole well design was cheap ass from the get go. No other major uses a single long string on Exploration wells like this. That is the first huge giveaway and there are at least a half dozen other saftey precautions they ditch to not spend the money.

BP is innocent

The trouble with you is that are you letting emotion get in the way of sound judgement. I never said that BP were totally innocent. I'm saying that I can't understand why they are getting all the flak when there were several other companies involved. When you get over your histrionics you might be able to see that, if you had your way you'd subject Tony Hayward to trial by ordeal to determine the truth. Actually thinking about it, a modern day version of that has already happened in the 17th June congressional hearings

I am just going by what I read.... I will defer to your knowledge of the industry on the rest...

He isn't smart enough though, he is whacked out on dope most of time and it comes across in his postings.
