I am a capitalist...first and foremost...and I have actually worked on Wall Street. Without free enterprise, most often motivated by the desire for more money...nothing works. Socialism has that deficiency...which it seems it is trying to correct by borrowing from capitalism.

Now...a question for you.

At what point do you think you would consider the disparity to be so serious a negative that steps would have to be taken to correct its trajectory. Surely you would think that if one person owned 99% of the nation's wealth. Right now 1% of the population owns 1/3 of the nation's wealth...meaning approximately 3,400,000 people own 33% of our wealth...leaving approximately 336,000,000 of our people sharing just 2 1/2 % of the wealth.

Where would it become critical for you...where would you see there is a problem?

I suspect that while your proposal to just take 56 trillion in wealth from the top 50% may well be good in principle, the devil is in the details. I think a better way to start would be focus not so much on the top 50%, but on the top 10%. According to a chart from Statista, the top 10% own 53.4% of the wealth in the U.S., those in the 50-90% bracket own 30.3% of the wealth and the bottom 50% just own 2.5%. If we assume that total U.S. wealth is 160 trillion as you stated, that works out, as 4 trillion is indeed 2.5% of 160 trillion. The chart actually has 2 categories for the top 10%- the 90-99%, which owns 36.4%, and the top 1%, which owns 17% of all U.S. wealth. The chart can be seen here:

Are you saying that you would be okay with one (or ten) individuals accumulating ALL the wealth of the nation? Are saying you would still consider our nation to be a healthy one if that were to happen?

It will never happen if free markets are left to work on their own. Socialism will get that result of wealth imbalance much quicker because growth will come to a screeching halt and pretty soon there is less to go around. The few who decide who get what will make certain they get theirs first.

I often say that I am the luckiest person alive. My life has been wonderful and fulfilling. Been some bad moments, but I guess that happens to everyone. But I have been very, very lucky overall. I am now 89 years old...play golf 3 - 4 times a week...and enjoy more often than feel frustrated by what happens in my life.

The problem is that the safety net is 7 layers thick, and there is no fear of failure. Our government has created and enabled an entire sector of the population to rely on it for life itself. Uncle Sam has created a bunch of bums.

You say you're 89. You grew up and worked in a time when government assistance was an embarrassment and folks only took it if they absolutely needed it. No dad ever wanted his kids to see that he was unable to provide, and he'd do any work to get off the food stamps ASAP. Working to provide was far more honorable than getting a free handout. Today, assistance if perfectly normal and acceptable. Low income earners are told they can't do it without help. When they hear it enough, they believe the lie and get to a point of not even trying.

I work in rental properties every day. I see who is working and who is not. I also see who is getting assistance. I get service calls for these apartments, and it just burns my ass. Last week I got a call for a furnace issue. The furnace room was stacked with trash and the bum couldn't be bothered to move his shit so I could access the furnace. He was too busy gaming while 2 kids ran around in sagging diapers. I removed his trash for him. I am helping pay for that!

Another last week had a leaky pipe near the kitchen sink. The girl couldn't be bothered to move stacks and stacks of dirty dishes for me, she was too busy sitting at the kitchen table chatting with friends and taking selfies, and watching me work. The sense of entitlement is disgusting, and the amount of money spent on these people is staggering. These are just a couple examples, there isn't the bandwidth available to describe them all.

Also with housing assistance comes the housing compliance inspections. We have to make certain that the free housing is in perfect working order. These inspectors love to justify their existence. Last month one inspection cost over 12K after unnecessary repairs were demanded. I had to install water backflow devices 8 buildings. There are no boilers or sprinkler systems, so the risk of backflow contamination is ZERO. We had to paint ALL the exterior wood window trim on the entire building because of very minor pealing. We also had to replace flex pipe traps under a bunch of sinks. Now ask yourself who is paying for those repairs. Rent goes up.

Not everyone on assistance is a POS, but it's a very different atmosphere than it was 30-40 years ago.

Question based on that predicate (which may be incorrect):

At what point do you think you would consider the disparity to be so serious a negative that steps would have to be taken to correct its trajectory. Surely you would think that if one person owned 99% of the nation's wealth. Right now 1% of the population owns 1/3 of the nation's wealth...meaning approximately 3,400,000 people own 33% of our wealth...leaving approximately 336,000,000 of our people sharing just 2 1/2 % of the wealth.

Where would it become critical for you...where would you see there is a problem?

Remove the safety net. Let free markets do their thing. I want all people to realize their full potential. Get the government out of our lives and unleash innovation and productivity. Have you noticed that the "wealth disparity" you speak of is increasing at a similar rate to the increase in welfare programs? We are creating the problem!
