“Trump says he’s ending trade talks with Canada over TV ads”

“WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump announced he’s ending “all trade negotiations” with Canada because of a television ad opposing U.S. tariffs”

“The post on Trump’s social media site came Thursday night after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he aims to double his country’s exports to countries outside the U.S. because of the threat posed by Trump’s tariffs.”

“Trump, a Republican, was still at it on Friday morning, furiously posting on his social media site that “CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!!” on the tariff ad”

Carney should have remembered the only accepted way to talk to Trump is butter his ego, repeating tell him he is the “best in history,” “tremendous,” a leader “like no one has ever seen before.” And now he’s gone and pissed Donnie off, Trump must have been up all night seething with anger, he’ll show those Canucks

Welcome to MAGA America

Welcome to MAGA America
We are being governed by insanity.

The ad, part of a $75 million campaign airing on US networks like Fox News, NBC, CBS, and during events such as Game 7 of the American League Championship Series, featured audio from a 1987 radio address by former US President Ronald Reagan. In the speech, Reagan—a Republican icon and free-trade advocate—criticized tariffs, stating they "hurt every American worker and consumer" and could "trigger fierce trade wars and economic disaster." The ad aimed to pressure US policymakers and public opinion against the tariffs, with Ford captioning its online release: "Using every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada. The way to prosperity is by working together."

The Reagan clip was deceptively edited.

A statement from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute also criticized the ad for using "selective audio and video" that "misrepresents" Reagan's full address. The foundation noted it did not approve or sponsor the ad and is "reviewing legal options." It encouraged viewing the unedited speech on its YouTube channel, where Reagan balances tariff criticism with support for targeted protections. Similar deceptively edited Reagan clips had been shared by Communist Chinese officials earlier in 2025 amid their own tariff disputes with Trump.

Deceptive editing. Post the last 55 seconds that the Canadians cut.

I'll understand if you don't, of course.
No problem

None of which invalidates Canada’s ad, even the Reagan Library did not state specifically how it was misquoted, only that they objected its use

And it is fall down comical how a MAGA and their Messiah live off the “credibility” of tweets are now bitching about what they think is deceptive editing

You must have skipped the part where Regans says it's important to not restrict a president's option in trade dealings, just like the Canadians did, except they just lopped off that part because it's what deceivers do.

Wrong, it’s there, even introduces the speech with it, he also latter explains why he was issuing a temporary singular duty aimed at just specified electoral products and not universal tariff on Japanese goods. In other words it was a surgical tariff and he was doing it because Japan had violated a trade agreement of years prior

All there, and none it makes Canada’s ad wrong

Not in the ad, it ain't. Canada's ad was 1:03. Deceptively edited to make low information people (like Y O U) think Reagan didn't think presidents should have the power to impose tariffs.

Fortunately, people who knew better spotted the deception (lying by omission) and exposed the truth.

Good to know that you're OK with foreign governments running deceptively-edited political ads to interfere with American government.

Not surprising, though.

BTW, you hated Reagan anyway, didn't you?

Wrong

The ad accurately portrayed Regan’s views on tariffs word for word, it never commented on any President’s view on the Office’s power to levy tariffs

And if “people knew better” why was Trump up all night tweeting in anger about a TV ad, a TV ad, too funny, he just knew it was the truth, that ws Reagan’s view in tariffs, and he was desperate to get out ahead of it

Wasn’t deceptive, and the truth never bothers anyone no matter who exposes it

Didn’t care for him, but real conservatives did, and this is just a portrait of Reagan’s, plus the old GOP’s, views on tariffs, there is nothing new here

Anything else I can straighten you out on?

The ad did not show the last 55 seconds of the original Reagan video because it did comment on President Regan’s view on the Office’s power to levy tariffs.

TRump is tariffing everything.....that hound does not hunt.

Trump is a stupid man. He believes in his power to bully. He is using tariffs to push other countries around. There will be long-term repercussions. We are pushing our long term trading partners to look elsewhere for a predictable and respectful trading partner. That is China. When Trump is gone, the new trading alliances will persist. Stup[d and pugnacious, what a combination.

Here is some back ground and insight on the tariff policies of the President.

Donald Trump's tariff policies are rooted in a nationalist, protectionist philosophy that views trade as a zero-sum game and tariffs as tools for economic leverage, national security, and political negotiation.

Core Philosophy of Trump's Tariff Policies

1.

  • Trump sees tariffs as a way to protect American industries from foreign competition.
  • He argues that free trade agreements have hollowed out U.S. manufacturing, especially in the Rust Belt, and that tariffs can reverse this trend.

2.

  • Trump frequently invokes the idea of “reciprocal tariffs”, meaning if another country imposes tariffs on U.S. goods, the U.S. should respond in kind.
  • He believes this creates fairer trade conditions, even if it leads to short-term friction.

3.

  • Tariffs are used as bargaining chips to pressure countries into trade concessions or policy changes.
  • For example, Trump imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico citing fentanyl trafficking and border issues, framing them as national security concerns.

4.

  • Trump has pushed the boundaries of presidential authority by invoking emergency powers (like the International Emergency Economic Powers Act) to impose tariffs without congressional approval.
  • This approach is currently being challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court.

5.

  • Trump claims tariffs bring in record revenues that help offset the national debt and fund domestic priorities.
  • Critics argue this is misleading, as tariffs are typically paid by importers and consumers, not foreign governments.

6.

  • Some analysts suggest Trump’s chaotic and unpredictable tariff announcements are deliberate, designed to keep trading partners off balance and more willing to negotiate.
  • Others argue it reflects a lack of coherent strategy.

🧠 Critics vs. Supporters

  • Supporters say Trump’s tariffs are a long-overdue correction to decades of unfair trade practices.
  • Critics argue they hurt American consumers, disrupt global supply chains, and alienate allies.
