Interesting article on the situation with McChrystal. Personally, I have mixed feelings about the situation. On the one hand, McChrystal is reputed to be a great strategist (especially with regards to counter insurgency). On the other, in the military, you are not supposed to belittle the CIC and civilian leadership in the public eye.

I hope Obama looks at McChyrstal's offering to resign as enough of a conciliatory gesture. I hope he also looks to what the Afghans think of McChrystal. The blog below is at least one opinion that should be considered if it is the prevailing view.

For those who haven't seen the Rolling Stones article yet... also a good read.

My guess is he'll still be leading in Afghanistan after this day. We'll see if my guess is correct.

What he did was wrong, and undermines the chain of command, next time if you want to speak out man, first don't get drunk and spout, but second resign before you do....

Its a tough situation, you have a good comander who made a dumb mistake. We need to keep him, but if he is off the reservation he will do no good.

I have no problem with him critizing the administration, I belive thats healthy, although he should have done it in private as doing it to the media jeoperdized the mission.

If the guy can be counted on to not do it again, and he is still the best man for the job otherwise, I say keep him.

We will see how big Obama's ego is... can he stand to keep the general?

Im sure most of you guys will be on here attacking the President no matter what way this sifts down.

I hope Obama take the bigger man approach. Dude spoke candidly when he shouldn't have. Obama should ask him "your the best man for this job, can I count on you" . If you can keep your piehole shut till your retirement book comes out go kill some Talibani/Alquada/Hamas/misc dark skinned middle easterners that don't have American nike shoes on.

Didn't he resign? I swear the story late yesterday was that he offered his resignation.
It has yet to be "accepted"... He offered it.

At this point The Obama has two choices.

He can accept the resignation (or refuse it and fire him) or he can refuse to accept the resignation and send him back to Afghanistan after he rips him a new hole.

I will be curious to see what the Rasmussen daily tracking poll will show on the president tomorrow...

as the other thread stated... it is really was a lose/lose decision for Obama as either way he decided someone could proclaim him as either weak (keeping an insubordinate officer in charge) or 'emotional/thin skinned' (taking a proven leader who is respected by the Afghan people out of command due to ill advised comments)

I think he alleviated it a bit by appointing Petreaus to replace McChrystal.

In my opinion, this was about the best Obama could have done with this situation, though I do think McChrystal will be missed.

That makes two, by one president not half way through his single term. His first one was the first in 50 years. :)

Dick Taters always blame the folks around them for their own failures.

Well practically every military high ranking official that I saw speak on this subject last night, said there were no and, ifs, or buts about it. He had to go. Military protocol cannot be breached.

I think the greater debate is: Were McChrystal's/aides remarks that bad and how close to the truth were they?

Petraeus goes from Iraq to Afghanistan. Kind of like from the oven to the microwave...

Ha, I asked myself if Patraeus would somehow get transferred to Afghanistan, and I answered myself "quit being retarded, this is not a game!!" and low-and-behold, I was correct. This is a game!!
