Mississippi has the highest mortality rate for seniors (adults aged 65 and older) among U.S. states, based on the most recent detailed state-level data for age-specific early death rates in the 65–74 age group.According to the America's Health Rankings 2023 Senior Report, which analyzes CDC data, Mississippi had an early death rate of 3,147 deaths per 100,000 adults aged 65–74 in 2021—the highest in the nation and twice the rate of Hawaii (1,552 per 100,000), the state with the lowest.

West Virginia followed closely with 3,066 per 100,000 in the same period (up 18% from 2020).

Nationally, the early death rate for ages 65–74 was 2,151 per 100,000 in 2021.
