We are also dealing with a Republican Senate majority that months ago capitulated to the President, effectively terminating its Constitutional function. It's hard to see what good choices this left for the Democrats.

Eight Senate Democrats (along with independent Angus King, who caucuses with them) voted yes on November 9, 2025, to advance the procedural motion for the clean continuing resolution, providing the critical votes needed to reach the 60-vote threshold and move toward ending the 40-day Schumer shutdown.

Of these, four are up for reelection in 2026:
  • Tim Kaine (Va.)
  • Jacky Rosen (Nev.)
  • Catherine Cortez Masto (Nev.)
  • John Fetterman (Pa.)
The other four — Dick Durbin, Maggie Hassan, and Jeanne Shaheen — have now decided to retire at the end of their current terms and are not seeking reelection, while the remaining one faces reelection in a later cycle (2030).
