While Tony Hayward, poor criminal soul, was getting "his life back" by attending a yachting race around the Isle of Wight, Americans were mourning the loss of fish, habitat, livelihood and the onset of oil toxic related illnesses caused by the BP spill.
If Hayward had bounced a dollar check three times, he would be spending life in prison for "three strikes your out" in some states, but because he's sharp-elbowed his way to the top through lies and malfeasance in order to secure BP's outlandish profits, he's treated as a member of the untouchable ruling corporate elite by the White House. He's even a bit of a hero in his native Britain, where he heads the largest corporation in the UK. BP is one of the last profitable remnants of the once might British Empire and how those Brits yearn, as we will be doing shortly, for those "glory days" of exploitation and theft of natural resources from other nations.
Hayward, who has an uncanny Tony Blair "wannabee" look, appears no smarter than your C- student in high school, but arrived on top based on cunning and cuthroat disssembling to government bodies. His major contribution to BP, between his visits to his beloved Vail, appears to be his ability to convey the corporate vision: "Lie to the Hilt, Don't Worry About the Consequences, and Lie with a Smile; All We Care About is Upping the Hundreds of Billiions of Dollars in Profits, No Matter What the Risk to People and All Creatures Big and Small."
Hayward should be given an ankle monitoring bracelet and forced to spend at least 5 years mopping the floors and cleaning the toilets at a ski lodge in Vail, retiring to sleep with the horses at night. No, that may be too lenient of a punishment for a man who has destroyed a large swath of our natural heritage and destroyed the jobs, lives and health of untold numbers.
Obama can see himself fit to fire McChrystal for insurbordinate comments he made about a sham war that is now America's longest, but the President can only give lip service to reining in the criminal cartel of BP and the other oil companies.
Not long ago, BP joined the other oil companies in greenwashing their image by making it appear that they were developing clean energy, when all they were really doing was going for broke in pursuing the last drops of oil in places that it was so dangerous to drill in, we are still left with the possibility that the floor of the Gulf of Mexico may blow up and it will become literally a sea of oil.
All you need to know about Tony Hayward is that he believes PR can save BP from prosecution for criminal malfeasance.
