Plato may have been the first who tried to sell monotheism to a multicultural world. Greek Gnosticism had a major influence on Christianity which found a way to keep with the tradition of polytheism.

I remember reading once that when Erasmus was trying to translate the Bible and he realized that the part of the Gospel of John (The Comma?) that was the foundation of the Trinity concept was not in the oldest manuscripts he had, the Church was able to "find" one or two with it in there so he had to include it.

Sounds "fishy", but then who knows.

The Trinity is a confusing mess of an idea. It's almost like a litmus test for belief: if you can accept 3 = 1 then you are in with the group.
