Thanksgiving Dinner Cost in 2025 vs. 2024

Based on the most reliable national surveys and retail data, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people is slightly cheaper this year (2025) compared to 2024. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), which has tracked this annually since 1986, reports the biggest drop: their basket of classic items (including a 16-pound turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, peas, cranberries, a veggie tray, pumpkin pie mix, pie shells, milk, and whipping cream) totals $55.18—a 5% decrease ($2.74 less) from 2024. This marks the third straight year of declines, largely driven by a 16.3% drop in turkey prices (now averaging $21.50 for 16 pounds, or about $1.34 per pound).
However, results vary by source and scope:

  • Ohio Farm Bureau (regional survey): Their classic basket is $76.81 for 10 people ($7.68 per person), up slightly from some sides (e.g., sweet potatoes +37%, peas +17.2%), but 28 cents cheaper overall than 2024 when including extras like ham and green beans.
  • Retail meal kits: Walmart's 2025 bundle for 8–10 people costs $39.33 (about $4–$5 per person), down from ~$56 in 2024—but it has fewer items (22 vs. 29 packages) and more store brands, so it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. Other grocers like Aldi and Publix offer similar deals around $40–$77, often cheaper per person than full homemade.
  • Contrasting views: A progressive think tank analysis (Groundwork Collaborative et al.) claims a 9.8% increase (to ~$64 from $58), citing hikes in items like cranberries (+22%) and creamed corn (+21%). This seems based on a narrower or differently weighted basket and may reflect urban/inflation-focused data, but it contradicts the AFBF's broader survey. Purdue University notes turkey at $2.05 per pound (up 25% from 2024 wholesale), but retail promotions have kept consumer prices lower.

Why the Drop Overall?

  • Turkey promotions: Retailers are slashing prices to boost sales amid bird flu recovery and competition, making the main protein (39% of the basket cost) a bargain.
  • Mixed sides: Grains like stuffing and rolls fell due to better wheat yields, but veggies and dairy rose from labor shortages and weather.
  • Inflation context: Food-at-home prices are up ~2.5% year-over-year (BLS September 2025), but holiday deals outpace that for Thanksgiving staples.
If you're shopping, opt for store brands or kits to maximize savings—expect $4–$8 per person. Regional variations apply (e.g., higher in cities like NYC), so check local ads. For a custom basket, apps like Flipp can compare prices.

Thanksgiving Dinner Cost in 2025 vs. 2020
The average cost of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for ten people in 2025 is approximately 18% higher than it was in 2020, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF).
Cost Comparison: 2025 vs. 2020
The AFBF's annual survey provides consistent, non-inflation-adjusted data for a "classic" meal for ten people, which includes items like a 16-pound turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie mix.
Year Average Cost (for 10 people)
2025 $55.18
2020 $46.90
Difference $8.28 higher
Price Trends and Factors
While the 2025 cost is lower than the record high of $64.05 in 2022, it is still significantly elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2020.
Inflation: General food price inflation and supply-chain disruptions since 2020 have pushed U.S. grocery bills up.
Turkey: The price of a 16-pound turkey in 2025 was approximately $21.50, compared to $19.39 in 2020.
Volatility: Prices for certain items, particularly fresh produce like sweet potatoes and veggie trays, have experienced significant volatility due to factors like weather and labor costs.
Even with inflation factored in, the current 2025 price is roughly in line with the inflation-adjusted cost of the 2020 dinner, indicating that the overall cost increase has largely tracked general economic changes over the five-year period. For detailed information, consult the American Farm Bureau Federation analysis.

"But to replicate her meal, American families this year will be set back around $107, 9 per cent more than in 2024, when the average cost of a meal was $98.37, according to an analysis by The Times of Child’s recipes and the latest inflation figures from the department of agriculture and Bureau of Labor Statistics."

Quit flooding the zone with these libtard lies! Know this and know these truths:

The world's greatest president, Donny - has brought prices down so low, things are almost free now!

Pete Hegseth, our very macho Secretary of War is not gay, even though he went on an on about how he loves ripped guys with no body hair.

There is nothing in the Epstein files but stuff on Democrats, and President Camacho is just too nice to let any Democrat suffer!

Ok. You may now carry on!

I'm impressed that some people actually have a clue as to how much they spent on dinner last year.
I admit I don't but it's because our folks are gone and my siblings and I just get together with our grown kids and friends. My sis as go herself a new boyfriend she's bringing to dinner. It will be my mission to gently interrogate the man to make sure he's good enough for my sister - it should go fine :)
