If God were real, you wouldn’t need a book

Don't kill, don't steal. Pretty much basis of every society in history. Nothing exclusive to Christianity.
Stealing, lying, adultery, coveting, and killing is the norm in human history.

Criminal laws were established to protect property and wealth, not to acknowledge the latent goodness of human behavior

Your post does not summarize all the values and virtues taught in the New Testament. Being able to control yourself to not murder or rape anyone is a moral bar so low it barely clears the floor. You are never going to get a pat on the back for not raping

Agreed about human nature and how human society develops rules to protect the common good. A society that is lawless soon falls apart.

You confuse morality with religion.

.

I'm not saying the Christian ethos is necessarily superior to any other ethical system. But it would be honest for us to acknowledge that after 2,000 years of western civilization we have smuggled in a New Testament ethos into our standard of what is right and wrong, even if we aren't religious.
I certainly not want the basis of ethics and law to be ancient Jewish religion.

What's the truth, domer76? That you know, for a fact, there is nothing beyond the physical? That all that matters is wealth and power just like the MAGAts are pushing?
I was responding to her belief about YHWH. YHWH was a minor Canaanite storm god who finally morphed his way to top god in the pantheon. She refuses to accept that truth or even do a little simple research into the subject.

Are you on fucking drugs or drunk where you can’t follow the thread?

Christianity is unique as it offers the free gift of Salvation through the Blood of the Cross!
Human sacrifice needed to save your soul. That god was unable to simply forgive without murdering Christ. Weird fucking concept.

It’s not a “free gift” because you have to give up something for it - critical thinking.

If you listen to @Cypress it's due to a god of some sort. There's no way people like Cypress can understand why harming others is bad for their own self-interest unless a big invisible magical being tells them it is.

NOte how often other posters blather on about the weak morality of benighted ancient civilizations that practiced human sacrifice and how we in the Western Tradition are so much more morally advanced! And how the Bible underlays this!

Then, as you noted, human sacrifice was STILL needed to create our Western Civilization.

Guess morality never did get started.

Hey, funny thing about Cypress and Doc Dutch: earlier on I disagreed with Cy and showed an error he made. This upset him so he started his usual BS. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY Doc started "Downvoting" all my posts. Hundreds a day. It was creepy as hell. He's still doing it.

Cy is obviously obsessed with reaction scores and because his "buddy" Doc kept lowering mine Cy then started talking about how low my reaction scores were.

Hmmmmm.

Smarter minds can draw obvious conclusions about "socks". ;)

(These people are messed up)

No one is forcing Salvation of the soul on you! You have free will!

How is this not the same as a mob boss saying "You can pay me, but no one is forcing you. If you don't then bad things might happen to you. It's your choice." ?

Not to be overly offensive but in many ways, especially for brands of Christianity that contain a literal torment in hell clause for failure to achieve salvation it kind of feels like that.

Ask yourself: if you had a single choice; no free will OR a really good chance of eternal punishment in abject horror and pain.

Which would YOU choose? I'd give up free will for 74 or so years if it meant not facing the opportunity to be tormented forever.

It’s just fucking weird about their god. The first go around, the people were sinful, so he drowned the entire world save a few people and that absurd mix of animals.

The second time, the people were sinful again, so he had his kid murdered to save us all.

I thought this fucker was all powerful, all-forgiving, all-everything. A critical thinker says, “Well, he could just decide who lives a good enough life to be forgiven and leave it at that.”

But, no. A bunch of theological hoops to jump before salvation. Including buying into that human sacrifice.

Doc was not following the gist of the thread. Confused a couple times. Drinking will do that. Promotes anger, too.

Old age, as well.

You don’t have to make that choice, do you?
