I lived in Germany for three years and am married to one. Her family speaks very little English and we visit for two weeks every year so I keep up with it.
TBH, I see no reason to learn another language just for the sake of doing so. Also if you don’t use it you lose it. But it’s useful and beats the heck out of depending on the wife to translate everything. Plus I have a much better connection to the German family.
