No president has ever suspended U.S. elections under the Insurrection Act — and nothing in the historical record suggests that the Act has ever been used, or could legally be used, to cancel or postpone a federal election.

If Trump tried that, some of his armed forces would not support him, and several of the National Guards would be called out to oppose it.
