New York City parents may soon have access to free child care for their 2-year-olds, under a plan unveiled Thursday by Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani — a major boon for the city's mayor on one of his signature campaign promises just days into his new job.

The two Democrats announced the program at a celebratory event in Brooklyn, with Hochul and Mamdani casting the initiative as a transformative step toward easing the city's notoriously high cost of living.

“This is the day that everything changes," Hochul said, also debuting a proposal to expand statewide access to child care in the coming years.

For Mamdani, whose ambitious agenda has been met with heavy skepticism, the announcement was a significant political victory in the opening days of his mayoralty, coming after a campaign that centered on elevating the needs of the city's struggling working-class residents.

From the article cited above:

The governor said she is committing to funding the first two years of the city’s free child care program for 2-year-olds, describing it as an expansion of the city’s existing pre-K and 3-K programs.

She said the
initial round of funding would come from the state's existing revenues, rather than having to raise taxes, a step the governor has opposed. Still, Hochul said it was difficult to forecast costs in future years when the program would be more widely available.

Wait a minute... Isn't this program supposed to be "free?" Why does a "free" program need "funding?"

Parents don't pay taxes?
I'd say you are playing stupid but you and I know that is not the case.

If parents, like everyone else pay their taxes and then are provided a NEW service that they do not have to put any additional dollars to it is fine to call it free to them.

Without the new service they would be paying that out of pocket on top of the taxes already paid.

Be gentle on him.

Then the childcare program isn't "free." It is simply government subsidized.

It is typical bullshit advertising to fool unsuspecting people.
No it is not.

It is absolutely free to the recipients and to not tell them that would be wrong.

Their taxes are sunk money. They can go get private paid for daycare or take advantage of the 'free to them ' city one

It's wrong to tell them that because somebody's paying and they're getting essentially welfare as a result. Worse, if people think it's free more people will try to use it meaning that more taxes will be necessary to subsidize it or it will end up rationed.

No, taxes are not. They are an expense. Sunk money is money that has been converted to another form like real estate or tangible goods. I can change what and how I gain income or own things to avoid taxes to some degree.

NOTHING is free.
In terms of monetary cost, nature provides many essentials for free, often referred to as "free gifts of nature" or ecosystem services. These are resources that exist without human intervention, labor, or exchange of currency.

Key Free Resources from Nature
Air and Sunlight: The air we breathe and sunlight, which is crucial for photosynthesis and energy, are generally not bought or sold.
Natural Water Sources: Fresh water from rivers, lakes, and rain is historically free. While treatment and transport cost money, the water itself is a natural resource.
Biodiversity and Ecosystems: Forests, oceans, and natural ecosystems provide services like oxygen production, water purification, and waste recycling without charge.
Pollination and Nutrient Cycling: Insects like bees pollinate plants, and natural processes create fertile soil, benefiting agriculture without a direct fee.
Recreation and Aesthetic Value: Public, undeveloped lands, beaches, and landscapes offer mental and physical benefits for free.

Oh and let's not forget about marijuana.
