Another interesting poll:

58% Favor English-Only Election Ballots

Can you believe there are actually 40% of likely voters who DON'T think a ballot for a US election shouldn't be in english only??? Should you not know the language before you can vote???

My ballots have always had Mandarin on them (it could be Cantonese, but I assume its Mandarin). I haven't noticed it lately, so either I have gotten used to it, or else they now send separate language ballots out to people who request them...

I have very good english skills, and sometimes I have a hard time understanding what some of those verbose and poorly worded ballot propositions are saying. I can imagine its almost impossible for people who are learning english, or who for whom english is a second language.

Maybe you can suggest that the GOP make it their platform to bring back some of those Jim Crow laws requiring a literacy test, or whatever?

40% doesn't shock me. Oddly enough, there's probably a large minority in this country that doesn't read RushLimbaugh.com, or spend a nanosecond of time stressing out about how to punish first-generation immigrants and non-english speakers. They basically probably don't give a shit.

Also, the magic of google, indicates there's a legal basis for providing ballots in other languages. Because of the fact, in certain conditions, proficiency in english isn't required for those who might otherwise be eligible for citizenship. Primarily, the elderly, or those with learning disabilities.

Seems reasonable to me. The elderly and the mentally-impaired generally might not have the cognitive capacities of younger people to fully absorb a new language.

But, if the GOP base wants to punish these people, I say go for it!

US Citizenship - English Proficiency

Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 15 years and are over 55 years of age;

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over 50 years of age; or

have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

Since you tend to let your emotions cloud your thinking; did you mean legal or illegal, when you referred to "first-generation immigrants"?

Ballots should be in Spanish only to prevent Republican idiots too ignorant to learn another language from voting.

If Toomey wins, he should be expelled from the senate, and senate special elections should be held, at the cost of Pennsylvania taxpayers, until they choose the correct person. We do not reward school children who answer a simple question of "2 + 2 = 5" with higher grades, do we? So why should we choose to reward ignorant children who answer "Good or evil?" with "Evil?"

Toomey's just a tool of Wall Street and his butt is owned by the Caterpillar Corporation.

Dumb PA conservatives are fooled by this wolf in sheep's clothing.

It's not "the GOP", unless you are claiming 60% of voters are "GOP". The fact that you must be able to read english to be a citizen is evidence enough you must be able to read it to vote.

Why aren't we all speaking Hopi or Cherokee? The rules never apply to us(a, just them! I guess only the winners get to pick the language of choice!

When I told my father I was dating a Filipina and it was serious he asked me if she spoke English. I said "About like your average southerner does." to which the cantankerous old fart said "That aint saying a hell of a lot."

If you keep voting Republican you may have to become proficient in that langauge to get a job!

The Ohio race should be interesting. Fisher and Portman are both good strong candidates. Fisher had an outstanding record as our AG and Portman was succesful as a congresman and as Bush's leader on his economic trade negotiating team. Portman has an advantage in the State with substantially more money coming from Republcian corporate donars and is very popular in ultra conservative Cincinnati. His draw back is that ultra conservative Cincinnati is very much out of touch with the rest of Industrial Ohio. He also lead the trade team negotiations for Bush that concluded in the trade agreement with China, something that his hugely unpopular in Ohio.

Fisher is well liked and highly regarded in the state as both an attourney, a law maker and an executive but he does not have Portmans money and he appears to be suffering more for anti-incumbant sentiment then Portman, which is odd as neither man is an incumbant. This should be an interesting but close race. Fisher's only real advantage is to hammer away at Portman's relationship with Bush and his involvement with the Chinese Trade Agreement.

No Republican is a good candidate. There should be no Republicans disgracing our senate, they should all be in a landfill.
