The iNews article is accurately reporting a real event: the Russian megayacht Nord, linked to sanctioned oligarch Alexei Mordashov (a close Putin ally), did pass through the Strait of Hormuz during a period when U.S. forces under Donald Trump were imposing strict shipping controls. The article’s interpretation (“Putin is laughing at Trump”) is editorial framing, but the underlying facts are supported by shipping data and public sanctions records.

Russian billionaire’s superyacht sails through Strait of Hormuz

April 27 (Reuters) - A superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov sailed through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, shipping data showed, one of very few vessels to transit the blockaded shipping lane at the heart of the U.S.-Iran conflict.

Nord - a ‌142-meter (465-foot) yacht worth over $500 million - left a Dubai marina at around 1400 GMT on Friday, crossed the strait on Saturday morning, and arrived in Muscat early on Sunday, according to data on the MarineTraffic platform.

Russia and Iran are long-standing allies and have become closer in recent years, including ‌via a 2025 treaty that strengthened intelligence and security cooperation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi arrived in Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin on Monday after discussions with mediators in Pakistan and Oman over the weekend.

Mordashov, known to be close to Putin, is not officially listed as the owner of Nord. But shipping data and Russian corporate records from 2025 show the vessel was registered to a Russian firm owned by his wife in 2022. This firm is registered in the Russian town of Cherepovets, where Mordashov's steelmaker Severstal is also registered.

Mordashov was among a number of Russians sanctioned by the United States after Russia's invasion of Ukraine for their links to Putin.

One of the largest yachts in the world, Nord has 20 staterooms, a swimming pool, a helipad and a submarine, according to industry publisher Superyacht Times.

Calling it fake news isn’t a rebuttal, it’s just you yelling at a headline. The shipping logs exist. The yacht exists. The sanctions records exist. The Strait of Hormuz transit happened.

If you think any of that is a lie, then point to the specific part you believe is false and provide a source. Screaming insults at verified data doesn’t make the data disappear.

Russian superyacht sails through Strait of Hormuz despite US blockade

A superyacht linked to one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's key allies has sailed through the Strait of Hormuz, despite the ongoing blockade of the critical shipping channel.

The 142m-long (465 ft) multi-deck luxury boat, named Nord, is linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov. It travelled from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, over the weekend - one of few private vessels to transit through the strait in recent months.

Iran held high-level talks with Russia this week as its standoff with the US continues.

Nord, estimated to be worth more than $500m (£370m), left Dubai on Friday night and arrived at Al Mouj - a marina in Oman's capital - on Sunday morning, according to data on the Marine Traffic platform.

Russian-Linked Superyacht Crosses Strait of Hormuz Despite US Blockade

A luxury superyacht linked to a sanctioned Russian billionaire passed through the Strait of Hormuz despite an ongoing blockade, underscoring inconsistencies in maritime restrictions during the Iran conflict.

BBC reported on Tuesday, April 28, that the 142-meter yacht Nord, associated with Russian oligarch Alexey Mordashov, sailed from Dubai to Muscat, Oman over the weekend.

Data from maritime tracking platforms shows the vessel departed Dubai late Friday and arrived at a marina in Oman’s capital on Sunday. It is among a small number of private vessels that have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in recent months, as most commercial and private shipping has avoided the route due to security risks.

Mordashov, one of Russia’s richest businessmen and chairman of steel giant Severstal, has been under Western sanctions since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

465-Foot-Long Russian Superyacht Passes Through US Blockade In The Strait Of Hormuz

According to multiple news sources, the 465-foot-long superyacht NORD (that was built by Lurssen in Germany and designed by Nuvolari Lenard in Italy) recently passed through the Strait of Hormuz from Dubai to Muscat, Oman.

Now, since I’m just a humble yachting journalist, I could not begin to speculate on what something like this means in the context of the significant geopolitical tensions in the area. But, I can refer to multiple news sources that report NORD is associated with Russian steel magnate Alexey Mordashov who’s currently worth almost $37 billion and is #58 on the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires list.

But, since I’m only a humble yachting journalist, I can draw attention to this 464-foot-long superyacht simply because, some might say it looks like a luxury aircraft carrier that, oh-by-the-way, has recently passed through a blockade of the Straight of Hormuz. Or maybe it’s simply part of growing genre of yachts that sport a pseudo-military style?

Fake news. Putin has nothing to do with this.
Do better.

Russia and China want to establish that International Rules and US agreements to them are meaningless so they can play that card in the future.

If the Trump administration blocks open sea transit... boards foreign ships... especially when they have no declaration of war against any party that is a potential war crime.

The law the US helped author and that almost all countries follow does allow for blocking open waters.

Russia and China in their future actions will be able to do this and cite US precedent when the US does it.

So while they would not do much now if the US acted it would be put in the bank for future use.

Neither the US or Iran are parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

(UNCLOS is the international maritime law accord that neither the United States nor Iran has fully ratified. While Iran signed UNCLOS, it has not ratified it, and the U.S. has not signed it at all.

symbolism over substance. The event is physcially meaningless, until some intellectual mind makes it a factual issue to spark arguments everywhere.

Symbolism doesn’t make the logistics disappear. The Nord wasn’t a metaphor, it was a sanctioned oligarch’s yacht cruising through one of the most monitored straits on the planet while U.S. restrictions were active. That’s not symbolic, that’s a real‑world gap in enforcement. The laughter isn’t poetic, it’s procedural, someone’s rules failed, and he sailed right through them.

Sanctioned Russian Billionaire’s $500M Superyacht Crosses Hormuz Despite US Naval Blockade

The yacht has been linked to Alexey Mordashov, the chairman of Russian steel company Severstal and one of the country’s richest businessmen. He is under US and European Union sanctions due to his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The yacht sailed south of Larak Island during its transit, alongside other sanctioned tanker traffic reported in the area, including Ocean Jet and Lumina Ocean.

The US State Department has not made any specific comment on the yacht’s transit.

At the same time, President Donald Trump has said the blockade is costing Iran around $500 million per day, though this figure has not been independently confirmed in official reports.

Tracking data shows that enforcement in the region has gaps. According to TankerTrackers.com, nearly four million barrels of Iranian oil bypassed restrictions on April 24 alone.
