you are quite wrong. I would guess that the vast majority of them use the title since they actually went to the trouble of earning it. Every researcher I know uses the title, even though they 'merely' have a PhD rather than an MD.

That is because you are a fucking moron and thus all anyone will call you is 'moron'.

Side note... most PhD's do not DEMAND you call them doctor. But they most certainly go by that at work and introduce themselves as such. (Note to the retards: (mainly Jarod) I am not saying ALL of them do this... but I would guess most do)

That's because a J.D. is an equivalent to a Masters if you want to be called doctor you need a PhD, those who have PhDs in law are called "Doctor"... And you know that many of your professors were called that.
 
Typically, because its a three year degree instead of a 6 year, lawyers are not afforded the same recognition of distinction, although DVMs (vets) certainly do. One thing about lawyers and vets, though, is that they typically need to advance to a 6 year degree in order to teach. DVMs must receive a PhD in pathology to teach, and I think its expected that JDs will pick up an advanced doctorate in something like agricultural/corporate/industrial law or criminology/sociology/etc.

Considering the degree of difficulty in earning a PhD I think it rather rude to not call someone who has earned that degree "Doctor" in a formal setting. They earned it.
