I have increasingly been thinking that he is still alive but for a long time I said that he probably did kill himself, as he is/was the kind of person who had zero interest in living in a prison, that is way worse than death to him.

Iran is not ruled by a hereditary dictatorship. The Supreme Leader holds ultimate power over all branches of government, but the position is constitutionally elective rather than hereditary.

Under Iran's 1979 Constitution (as amended in 1989), the Supreme Leader (Rahbar) is selected by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member body of clerics elected every eight years by popular vote. The Assembly is also empowered to supervise or dismiss the Leader if he is deemed unfit.
