Rescue efforts under way after oil rig explosion in Gulf

[Posted at 11:43 a.m.] U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough tells CNN that all 13 workers involved in the rig explosion are accounted for, but one person is injured.

Coast Choppers are on the way to the site 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay.

[Posted at 11:33 a.m.] An oil rig has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 12 people overboard and one missing, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.

Rescue attempts are under way for at least 12 people, Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards told CNN. 13 people were on board the rig total, Edwards said, noting 12 have been accounted for, but one person was missing.

The accident took place 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana on the Vermilion Oil rig 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy.

The Coast Guard has multiple helicopters, an airplane and several Coast Guard cutters en route. It's unknown if there are any injuries.

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an oil and gas platform explosion Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico west of the recent catastrophic BP oil spill.

Mariner Energy's Vermilion Rig 380 exploded about 90 miles south of Vermilion Bay, off Louisiana about 10:30 a.m., Thursday, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough said on CNN.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said there were seven helicopters, two airplanes and four cutters in the area, Bloomberg reported.

Thirteen crew members were on the rig and have all been accounted for, the spokesman said.

Mariner Energy is based in Houston.

All have now been accounted for....

Is it not the least bit ODD to anyone but myself, that we suddenly, after 100 years of oil exploration, have TWO rigs unexpectedly explode in the Gulf of Mexico in less than a year? Yeah, I realize the Obama sycophants want to blame it all on BP, and greedy capitalist deregulating Drill Baby Drill neocons, but how many 'one-in-a-million' oil rig explosions have to occur, before we start to consider this might be terrorist related?

Its definitely spewing. mile long oil slick already

shit.... I have a 2.4 mile swim in the gulf in November... please put all booms around panama city beach please... regardless of who else might need it. Cause I am a selfish bastard.

:eek3:

After 8 years of almost 0 regulation by the Bush Administration, its not a suprise to me.

It would be irresponsible not to speculate!

Well but of course! And if President Bush were still president, I am almost certain this could attributed to either a Bush/Cheney evil plot or radical Islamics we've pissed off around the world, but Obama is president, not Bush! Now, with all the goodwill this president has spread, and the fact that 78% of Muslims like president Obama, that certainly can't be the case! And of course, it MUST be all those unattended to regulations that Bush removed, and Obama has been completely unable to reinstate, even after the first oil rig explosion, because greedy capitalist neocons still have enough power in Washington to prevent that! Really, Bush and Cheney still run the country, and still set the rules and regulations, and there's nothing Obama can do about that, he needs another 4 years and another 6-years of a Democrat-controlled congress behind him as well, then maybe they can start to do something about these mysterious exploding oil rigs in the gulf! Is that how you see it, moron??

I am all for putting booms around Panama City Beach. Not for, but because that is some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

How about we investigate the incident and THEN make an announcement of the cause. Making rash statements before the investigation is complete is a waste of time.

It could be lax safety programs. It could be faulty equipment. It could be terrorists. It could be a disgruntled employee. It could be a natural disastor that caused it. It could be a fake news story. It could be aliens from outer space.

But making every incident into an instant political statement is the action of a hack.

I've not made any kind of "rash statement" idiot, I asked a goddamn question! Is that STILL ALLOWED?

It could be lax safety programs... funny this never happened in all the years of oil drilling when we had virtually NO safety programs, but I suppose it's possible. It could be faulty equipment, but again, all those years of even less sophisticated equipment, we never had oil rigs spontaneously explode, but maybe that's it? Natural disaster? Disgruntled employee? Yeah, maybe so, who knows? Aliens from outer space seems more likely, if you ask me!

Yeah, I am sure it's not a terrorist attack, it can't possibly be that, can it? I mean, especially since we've sold the first one as being completely the fault of BP and deregulation by Bush.... that went over so well, we can't even think of looking at something else now, can we?

Didn't seem like there was much/any aerial activity around the explosion point today at work. I'm not sure what to make of this, except that the press is still focused on Maryland and Earl for the most part. Hopefully there is not much pollution and environmental damage from this rig.

Anyone know if this company is a subsidiary of BP?

Would you be happier if it was?

I want to know how the debate will be shaped on this site for the forseeable future:

BP Subsidiary: Brits here get more defensive and some Americans continue to pound away at them.

Not BP: Brits throw it in their attackers faces, pointing out how an American oil company has just screwed up, and telling them to have a bloody brilliant day.
