Visa Europe has begun suspending payments to whistle-blowing website Wikileaks ahead of carrying out an investigation into the organisation.

It follows a similar move by rival payments processor Mastercard on Tuesday.

Visa's announcement comes after Wikileaks' founder Julian Assange was arrested by police in London.

Mr Assange, whose website has published secret documents, is wanted in Sweden on sexual assault allegations.

Wikileaks relies on online donations to fund its operations, which will now not be possible using both Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards.

Bloody funny really, they have no trouble accepting payments from child porn websites but they draw the line at WikiLeaks.

Mastercard 'hit by Anonymous Wikileaks revenge attacks'

Internet hacktivists are claiming to have brought down the Mastercard website as revenge for the firm withdrawing services to Wikileaks.

The Anonymous group of hackers have also brought down the website of the Swedish prosecutors office which is pursuing founder Julian Assange.

It has pledged to launch denial-of-service attacks on websites it sees as anti-Wikileaks.

Earlier it hit the Swiss bank that froze Mr Assange's assets.

PayPal, which has stopped processing donations to Wikileaks, has also been targeted.

Wikileaks have, rather helpfully, provided some context as to the recent actions by Visa and Mastercard.

WikiLeaks cables: US 'lobbied Russia on behalf of Visa and MasterCard'

The US lobbied Russia this year on behalf of Visa and MasterCard in an attempt to ensure the payment companies were not "adversely affected" by new legislation, according to American diplomats in Moscow.

A state department cable released this afternoon by WikiLeaks reveals that US diplomats intervened to try to amend a draft law going through Russia's Duma. Their explicit aim was to ensure the new law did not "disadvantage" the two US firms, the cable states.

The revelation comes a day after Visa – apparently acting under intense pressure from Washington – announced it was suspending all payments to WikiLeaks, the whistle-blowing website. Visa was following MasterCard, PayPal and Amazon, all of which have severed ties with the site and its founder Julian Assange in the last few days.

The companies have justified their decision to stop donations on the grounds that WikiLeaks is acting "illegally". Each has quickly become the target of sustained online revenge attacks by disgruntled hackers, with mastercard.com paralysed today.

Well, with Visa and Mastercard both to be boycotted, that pretty much leaves nothing, unless you count American Express, and come obscure ones like Star and other nonentities.

I was actually thinking of mailing in the mega Visa credit card offerings they've been sending en masse in the mail in honor of this.

Go VISA, and now I can actually say: Go OBAMA!

The wikileaks dude said he would destroy our economy if they ever tried to prosecute him for anything. Methinks the dude is a bit of a nutter.
