WASHINGTON — Two packages exploded in the mailrooms of two Maryland state government buildings on Thursday, but no one was seriously injured, a federal law enforcement official said.

The official said one was in the mailroom of the Maryland Department of Transport facility in Hanover while the other was in a mail-handling facility in a state building in Annapolis.

The official said the packages detonated, erupting into smoke and flames, but that no one was hurt or seriously injured and no one was taken to the hospital.

The official said the Maryland state police was the lead agency investigating, and that the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies were assisting.

Anyone mailing a package will be required to be photographed and give a DNA sample.

When I first moved to WA from CA I was impressed by the fact you could buy the coolest fireworks for bargain prices. We went out and bought bottle rockets etc by the trunk load. That year for Christmas I sent my daughter and her husband a large package with candles, clothes, gift cards and home made goodies etc. I also put in a number of bottle rockets and other booty from our fireworks stash. I took the box to the post office and mailed-never once thinking about the fact that I was sending explosives through the mail!

My daughter opened the box and called to tell me how lucky I was that they, the USPS, missed what I had done or I would have been jailed and or fined!

This was Dec 2002...just 15 mos after 9/11 and all the scare over anthrax----

I wonder what totalitarian policy this will set into action... *sigh*

i wonder if the packages weighed less than a pound

we already have to mail packages that weigh more than a pound at a post office and have it stamped by a clerk - maybe they will add requiring an id

we are losing the war on terror to ourselves:(
