Obama: Palestinian State Must Be Based on 1967 Borders

President Obama, in a sweeping address tackling the uprisings in the Middle East and the stalled peace process, on Thursday endorsed Palestinians' demand for their own state based on the borders that existed before the 1967 Middle East war.

The break with longstanding U.S. policy is likely to aggravate the Israelis, who want the borders of any future Palestinian state determined through negotiations. The declaration comes ahead of a meeting in Washington between Obama and visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"The status quo is unsustainable," Obama said. "A lasting peace will involve two states for two peoples."

Though the president endorsed the call for a Palestinian state with permanent pre-1967 borders, including mutually agreed land swaps, the president sought to assure that the United States' commitment to Israeli security is "unshakable." He said Israeli's right to defend itself will remain paramount, and suggested the recent unity agreement between Fatah and Hamas, which the U.S. deems a terrorist group, is problematic for negotiations. He also publicly rejected attempts by the Palestinians to gain recognition for their own state before the United Nations.

CAIRO (AP) -- In a recording made shortly before his death, Osama bin Laden praised the mass protests that have toppled and shaken longtime rulers across the Arab world while trying to cast a role for al-Qaida in the region's future.

Bin Laden's message, released on militant websites Thursday and addressed to "the Muslim nation," represents an attempt by the terror leader to remain relevant following sweeping changes in which al-Qaida and militant Islam have played almost no role.

"The winds of change will spread through the entire Islamic world, God willing," bin Laden said in the 12-minute audio message.

I am against a Palestinian state. Israel should take over the West Bank and Gaza Strip and rebuild their settlements. Palestinians who don't want to live peacefully with Jews can move to Jordan, which should for all intents and purposes be regarded as the Palestinian homeland.

why are you against a palestinian state? it makes sense. imo, the oslo accords are a great starting point for borders. but for obama to demand israel go back to pre 1967 borders shows he is wholly ignorant of the history in that region. further...using his logic....we should give our land back to mexico...the indians etc....obama made a huge mistake by basically demanding this.

It is apparent to me that only the destruction of the Jewish state and its inhabitants will satisfy the Palestinians' primitive urges. Some Palestinians manage to live peacefully in Israel. Obama also said that in order for the Palestinians to have their own state, that they would have to recognize Israel's right to exist

a land swap for an equivalent amount of land (equivalent to the west bank) added to the Gaza strip would be better than a corridor of land between the two Palestinian sections - though such a deal is not likely - maybe two Palestinian states would be the best solution

Considering one of the main points of disagreement is the Temple Mount where the (Muslin) Dome of the Rock stands and where the (Jewish) Second Temple stood that is the first area that requires attention. It is the "center" of both the Jewish people and the Muslims and because of the influence from and the beliefs in that particular area it needs to be removed from the picture.

Like parents taking away a toy when two children constantly fight over it the world (United nations?) needs to address that problem. In order to restore a portion of world harmony either that area is forever designated a world site accessible to all and under the control/ownership of a world council or the area is obliterated.

One possible solution is to nuclear contaminate the soil so it's of no use to anyone.

This nonsense has to stop and if the opposing parties can't agree, take the "toy" away. Once the thing upon which people focus is removed, as when a toy is taken out of sight, they move on to other things.

The pre-1967 borders have been part of the proposed solution for decades, dating back to 1967 and UN Security Council Resolution 242.

I must admit to being completely gobsmacked at this. An American president actually preaching international justice!!
To those who want to return other lands and territories let them show that whatever happened is within living memory and that there has been constant objection to any invasion/takeover.
