Well, actually it is.
You might, should you ever save the money, like to visit HK. Many of your compatriots do. I doubt that any return to the US with an impression of a controlled society. Most view it as exciting, exotic, fantastic and a whole list of superlatives. Find one and ask.

I read that HK has the freest economy in the world. That should entice some of these righties.

Protesting with weapons is something seen at the TEA Party events that was most excoriated by those who call them "Teabaggers"...

I feared they would lose some of that freedom when China took over HK. So far they have allowed them to continue as before. It was my hope they would see the benefit of a free economy and provide some of that freedom on the mainland. Imagine a free China.... One where they don't kidnap leaders of Tibetan Buddhism to train them to be something other than what they would be if left alone. Imagine freedom of religion...

I can only hope that the Chinese will someday be more free, as free as we would wish to be here in the US, as we are told we are...

When you say 'free' it is said more in hope than truth, when they say free there is not quite so much hope! But please stop this banging on about Tibet a la Richard Gere. He is a long way from reality if one can say there is a single reality. Tibet has never really been independent and the relationship between Tibet and China has swung from Tibet controlling most of China to China controlling Tibet with a sort of symbiotic relationship developing over a period of hundreds of years in between. You should not believe all of your homeland propaganda. Freedom, as defined by the US word factory, is no more accurate than the Chinese definition.
Now, from that I am sure you have arrived at a conclusion about my thoughts on Tibet. You are wrong. I am very much opposed to the Chinese treatment of the Tibetans. I have, on several occasions, searched unsuccessfully for the true history of the country. The only conclusion I have reached is that the information disseminated in America is probably as far from the truth as the information disseminated by Beijing.
Logically I would say that as religion has no place in man's progress that aspect of the equation should not be counted. Freedom is, as we know, largely a myth that comforts us. Happiness is important and there seems little doubt that Tibetans are less happy than they were, and progress and modernisation are extremely moot.

i find it interesting that nobody on the left had an answer for Damos question, save for the two that wouldn't know what a bill of rights was even if it kicked them in the jewels.

In my opinion, Chinese leadership saw the benefits HK had seen under Capitalism and that is why they loosened up and allowed a more capitalistic business model to exist, while a the same time they are able to maintain political control. It doesn't stop the abuse you describe above, but it has moved their society over the past decade to embrace more and more of capitalism.
