The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of S. West Street.

A 20-year-old woman was flown to a Portland hospital by air ambulance Tuesday after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The young woman had just passed a rifle to an acquaintance at a residence when the shooting took place.

According to Capt. Jeff Kosmicki, a spokesman for the Newberg-Dundee Police Department, police responded to a "shots fired" call shortly before noon at a residence in the 1200 block of North Meridian.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 20-year-old woman inside who had been shot in the abdomen.

Emergency responders treated the woman and decided she needed to go to the hospital and arranged for an air ambulance.

In the course of the investigation, Kosmicki said, officers learned that the victim, whose name has not yet been released, had just handed the rifled to a friend, Matthew J. Warnke, 19, of Clackamas, when he pulled the trigger, thinking the rifle was not loaded.

Marie Lagman was in the vehicle with her mother, 67-year-old Nieves R. Lagman and her father, 68-year-old Augusto M. Lagman, who were also killed in the collision.

A 24-year-old Norwood woman died and more than a dozen people were injured in crashes around eastern Massachusetts today.

Just before 2 p.m., a 2009 Ford Focus driven by Alison E. Irving in the left lane of Interstate 95 south in Walpole spun across the travel lanes, striking a right side guardrail, flipping, and landing on its roof.

Irving was partially ejected from the car and killed instantly. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, 25-year-old Andrew A. Costello, also from Norwood, was ejected from the vehicle into the woods. He was taken by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

All southbound lanes were closed for the rescue operation for more than two hours, as traffic was detoured onto Coney Street, State Police said.

Later, at around 3:30 p.m., a van and two other vehicles crashed on Interstate 495 northbound in the town of Boxboro, resulting in 10 injuries as police called for five ambulances and another medical helicopter. Victims were taken to three area hospitals, but none of their injuries were considered life-threatening, State Police said.

The highway was closed in both direction for hours during the investigation and rescue operation. At least one person was ejected from the van.
