Romney's Financial Disclosure Forms Inaccurate

Whoops:

Some investments listed in Mitt and Ann Romney’s 2010 tax returns – including a now-closed Swiss bank account and other funds located overseas – were not explicitly disclosed in the personal financial statement the GOP presidential hopeful filed in August as part of his White House bid.

The Romney campaign described the discrepancies as “trivial” but acknowledged Thursday afternoon that they are undergoing an internal review of how the investments were reported and will make “some minor technical amendments” to Romney’s financial disclosure that will not alter the overall picture of his finances.

A review by the Los Angeles Times/Tribune Washington Bureau found that at least 23 funds and partnerships listed in the couple’s 2010 tax returns did not show up or were not listed in the same fashion on Romney’s most recent financial disclosure, including 11 based in low-tax foreign countries such as Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and Luxembourg.

The campaign has stressed that Romney has paid all required U.S. taxes on his foreign funds.

Many of the funds are affiliated with Bain Capital, the Boston-based private equity firm Romney ran for 15 years. Several others are apparently unrelated offshore entities with mysterious names such as Babson 2006-1, which is based in the Cayman Islands, and Barracuda Investments, which has an address in Dublin, Ireland, but appears to be solely owned by Golden Gate Capital, a private equity firm based in San Francisco.

Among the assets omitted is a Swiss bank account in Ann Romney's blind trust that campaign officials said held $3 million of the couple's money until it was closed in 2010. The account was listed on a financial disclosure Romney filed in 2007, but it was mistakenly named as an asset held by the couple, not as part of Ann Romney's trust. The campaign said it is filing an amendment to the most recent report to reflect $1,700 worth of interest earned in the Swiss bank account in 2010, as well as another amendment to move the account to the appropriate category in the 2007 report.

The Romney campaign dismissed the omission of information as inadvertent and inconsequential, noting he has released more than 600 pages of information about his finances.

But the discrepancies between Romney’s tax returns and his personal financial statement speak to a broader challenge facing the longtime private equity chieftain: convincing voters that he can relate to their economic distress despite the incredibly complex architecture of his immense fortune.

I hope that is enough of the article to avoid the wrath of SF, the cherry-picking police. Romney sure is finding new and clever ways to make his wealth an issue in this campaign. Christ. He didn't know as of 2008 that he was going to run again in 2012? He didn't think he'd ever have to disclose his returns? He didn't think that it might be a bad idea to not include everything on his financial disclosure forms?

The issue would never have gone away completely, but he would have taken a hell of a lot of sting out of the issue if he were just open and honest about it.

oh good lord, this is really trivial. also, i seriously doubt romney put the package together.

if this is all you have, you're more afraid of obama losing than i thought

That's awesome. Heaven forbid you hold the candidate that signed the forms certifying that they were accurate responsible for the contents. And I'm sure it's just the most amazing coincidence that one of the mystery investments omitted from the financial disclosure was the Swiss bank account.

The guy is a fucking moron for fucking this up.

nigel....do tell how the LA times came across this information. be specific as to where the information came from and who made the information public.

yeah... like you held the 429 Obama admin members responsible for FAILING to pay their taxes. Romney at least paid his.

So according to Dung.... failing to pay taxes if you are a Dem=ok
Paying all of your taxes, but failing to report accurately every investment .... da EVILZ

Maybe you should go ahead and quote me on failing to pay taxes is OK. I'll wait. But just so we're clear, it's perfectly kosher for a presidential candidate to file erroneous financial disclosure forms because he paid his taxes? Is that that you're saying?

And I don't think Romney is evil for failing to file accurate financial disclosure forms, I think he's stupid for doing so. He knew (or should have known) that his wealth would be an issue in the campaign and that he would not be able to forever hide his tax returns. Failing to file proper elections forms and appearing to hide offshore investments and Swiss bank accounts is just plain stupid. I thought that much we could agree on. I guess not.

You can read the article as well as I can. How about you tell me why it's relevant? Anyone can access Romney's financial disclosure forms and his tax returns and compare them.

it is a simple question nigel. i'm wondering why you're hesitant to answer it....actually, no i'm not, we both know why.

this is where you show your true colors. the information wasn't hidden, it was right there in his tax returns. that is why you won't answer the question because it makes you look like a whiny toe licker. it was a mistake and you know as well as i romney didn't prepare the 60 page disclosure form.

this is really dumb of you to make such a huge deal about it.

It was right there in his tax returns that he refused to release until being pressured to do so by his political opponents in the Republican primary. You'd maybe have a point if Romney's tax returns were made public all along and if Romney voluntarily released his tax returns upon running for the presidency, but he didn't do that. Instead, he kept the accurate forms hidden from the public while he filed, with a certification that the forms were accurate which he personally signed, inaccurate forms that just so happened to omit his Swiss bank account and various other offshore investments.

Someone is showing his "true colors," but it ain't me.

I hold your opinion of me in such high regard that I am seriously questioning my views on the matter.

damn if doesn't release the forms and damned if does. it was a ridiculous mistake, but please, continue making this a big issue. i hope obama runs with it as well....

Apparently you aren't interested in having a discussion about the subject at hand and would prefer to be an ankle-biting nit-wit.

funny how anytime your bullshit gets called, the person doing so is an ankle biter. you claimed the answer was in the article, then you later changed your story to " i don't know"....yeah...how dare i correct the great nigel and show his bullshit...

You asked a stupid question and got two appropriate answers. Rather than staying on subject, i.e. Willard's failure to file accurate financial disclosure forms, you instead, as per usual, want to talk about me. While I'm flattered, no thanks.

It's your standard ankle-biting MO -- shift the discussion to one about the posters as opposed to one about the subject that is obviously a sensitive spot for those that you support politically.

No, he's not damned at all. I'm unaware that anyone will be meting out eternal justice over this kerfuffle.

Romney has a problem he doesn't file accurate financial disclosure forms, particularly so in light of his wealth. He doesn't have so much of a problem if he files accurate financial disclosure forms.

and yet you've made a big stink about it...

hilarious, i ask you a question related to the topic and you turn around and put the onus on me. you then later changed your story, and get all pissy when that is pointed out. that was germane to the topic because YOU are making a huge stink about this, claiming he "appears" to be hiding something, when the reality is, he is not as he released his tax returns. hence, it was important for you to acknowledget that, but instead, you get toe licker on me and demand i answer my own question. you do this all the time, yet somehow, when you do it, it is not nitpicky.

stop being such a pompous crying douchebag
