This will never Happen!

And

79% of Americans Dont Want Ronald Reagan on Their Money!

Republicans have continued their push to pass a bill that would replace President Ulysses S. Grant on fifty dollar bill with Ronald Reagan, but a new Marist poll found that people not only dislike the idea, but reject it soundly. 79% of those surveyed replied that they do not want Ronald Reagans smiling mug on their money. Most surprisingly, 71% of Republicans did not like the idea either.

The Marist Poll also uncovered a surprising result. When the results of the poll were broken down by party affiliation, 71% of Republicans thought that the switch was a bad idea, 83% of Democrats, and 79% of Independents didnt like the idea either. The idea of Reagan on our money was rejected by both those who make over $50,000 (78% disapprove), and those who make under $50,000 (81% disapprove).

The support for the change was strongest with those age 18-29 (15%), and those who live in the Western part of the United States (15%). Men and women almost equally thought that putting Reagan on the fifty is a bad idea (77%-80%), as well as college grads and non college grads (78%-81%). The whole idea of replacing Grant with Reagan is being pushed by Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), who said, Every generation needs its own heroes. One decade into the 21st century, its time to honor the last great president of the 20th and give President Reagan a place beside Presidents Roosevelt and Kennedy.

Unfortunately for Rep. McHenry, the vast majority of the American people dont agree with him. As I laid out in a post last month, 5 Reasons Why Ronald Reagan Should Never be on the $50 Bill, the right wing myth of St. Ronnie of Conservatism doesnt match up with the facts of his presidency. Time has not distorted the public perception of Reagan. It has sharpened it, and it is clear to most people that no matter how much the right wingers build a mythology around Reagan, he will never be in same class as Kennedy and F.D.R.

A while ago there was talk of putting Rayguns on the dime, but we don't want our dimes worth 6.5 cents.

Rushmore? On our currency? Never.

I liked Uncle Ronnie a lot but some of this hero worship and mythologizing the guy really creeps me out. I think Ronald Reagan is a far more interesting person when looked at, warts and all, then from this quazi religeous hero worship of him the right wing seems to have. The guy they idolize sure as hell isn't the guy I voted for.

Personally, and I know this may seem a bit extreme to many but I think Mt. Rushmore should be blown up. I have nothing against the tribute to four of our greatest political leaders but it was pretty asinine to build it in the Black Hills.

In no way should he be put on Rushmore. That said, it IS time we took Grant off the $50. Though I would recommend Ike over Reagan.

I have no problem with Grant on the $50 Bill. He's being honored more for his accomplishment as a General then as a President. Having said that, I can't argue with you about Ike. He and TR were the best two Republican Presidents of the last 100 years.

I think we should auction off rights to be pictured on our currency and use the proceeds for debt reduction. We could do, like, ten year leases or some shit.

True. But Ike was a great military leader, great President AND he was the last President to actually reduce our nations debt year over fiscal year.

FDR consistently rates in the top three by historians of all kinds.

Another inconvenient truth. :(

Which is quite funny given the number of times members on the left bring up the Reagan 'mythology'. FDR was good President. Some of his policies were good. Others were derived from good intention but poorly executed. But the man presided over TEN years of depression. A President today wouldn't get a second term for that type of performance economically... as Obama could shortly find out.

THe left brings up the Reagan mythology because historians of all kinds have not been rating him in the top three of presidents for the past 70 years. Your opinion isn't relevant, nor is mine. Just the facts ma'm.

LMAO... in terms of accomplishment what exactly did FDR do?

Biggest pro was Glass Steagall (which Clinton repealed... the dumbass).

Biggest con was ten years of depression.

Uhm....well that's a very American notion but we'd probably end up with Chairman Mao on the ten spot.

Uhhhh....if it wasn't for this little thing called World War II you might have a point. As it was FDR lead us from a transition from an economically depressed world power to a nuclear age super power. I would agree with you that if FDR was evaluated on his economic policies during the Great Depression alone it would be very controversial to classify him as one of the greats. His leadership during the war, like Lincolns, was inspired and like Lincoln he made the ultimate sacrifice. There can be no argument that durring WWII there were lots of losers. The Soviets lost between 20 and 40 million people. The great colonial empires of France and Britain were eviscerated and Germany and Japan were smoking ruins. The US came out the clear cut winner of WWII as the worlds most powerful nation both economically and militarilly and we remain so to this day. FDR had no small part in that achievement.
