Anti-Mormon bias persists, notably among Democrats

Now, it turns out a better question might be whether Democratic voters would accept a Mormon candidate. In a survey that cuts against the media stereotype, a new Gallup Poll has found that more Democrats than Republicans say they would not vote for a Mormon for president. Twenty-seven percent of Democrats say they wouldn't vote for a Mormon, while 18 percent of Republicans say the same. For independents, the figure is 19 percent.

Anyone who'd vote for or against someone based on their religion probably shouldn't be voting.

Well, now come on, if you think they are going to try and throw the Constitution over and create a Theocracy, I think it is a good reason to vote against them!

To be perfectly fair, Mormonism is pretty nutty...

not really much more than other religions

if a candidates principal claim to fame is their religious views, i would tend to vote against rather than for

still the golden rule has it points and some moral principals promulgated do too, it is the other stuff that it comes wrapped in that bothers me the most

I've got a theory, the closer a religion is to it's conception, the nuttier the practices. That's why Mormons are a cult, Muslims are "radicals" and Christians are (in)sane. Ever go check out a pagan church? They do whatever they want and it's almost impossible to offend them.

Any more nutty than Islam? Or more current protestant Chrsitianity? Papal Christianity?

Which one isn't "nutty"?

With one we have a pedophile with epilepsy who can't read dictating a holy book. With another an Angel visits and helps somebody find and translate some golden plates that become a holy book, and in another we have one written by unknown authors with stories where grass fires tell people to take off their sandals and go tell Pharaoh he sucks.

Which sounds more "crazy" to you?

I rather like the goddesses and gods on Oylmpus.

There are degrees of nuttiness, thought I would agree that all are nutty.

Mormonism falls somewhere between Christianity and Scientology.

Off the shelf, probably christianity. But Judaism is a close second. Some of the stories in there are wierd. After that... Well they're all kinda crazy, I tend to judge religions on the people. I know a fair number of very nice mormons, one of whom I'd nominate for sainthood, I know some nice enough christians, a couple decent muslims and a single catholic, and he's wierd.
