Obama on Why Michelle Was a Working Mom (at $316K Per Year): ‘We Didn't Have the Luxury for Her Not to Work

Speaking Friday at what the administration called “The White House Forum on Women and the Economy,” President Barack Obama said that after his two daughters were born, he and his wife—both Harvard Law School graduates—could not afford the “luxury” of having her stay home with the children.

In 2005, when Obama began serving in the U.S. Senate (and his daughters turned 4 and 7), he and his wife were earning a combined annual income of $479,062. Barack Obama was paid a salary of $162,100 by the U.S. taxpayers, and Michelle Obama was paid $316,962 to handle community affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center.

“And then there is the woman who once advised me at the law firm in Chicago where we met,” Obama said of his wife in his Friday talk. “Once she gave me very good advice. That's why I decided to marry her. And once Michelle and I had our girls, she gave it her all to balance raising a family and pursuing a career--and something that could be very difficult on her, because I was gone a lot.
“Once I was in the state legislature, I was teaching, I was practicing law, I'd be traveling,” he said. “And we didn't have the luxury for her not to work.

Really? They couldn’t live on $162,000 and change? How does he explain that to “his” sheep?

no, that's US legislation salary. Illinois state legislation salaries are $67,836/year + per diem

What salary are you talking about...the one they mention in the article?

It looks like Obama is talking about the time when he was in state legislature. Unless I'm not reading that correctly.

Because making that comment when he was earning $67k/yr is a lot different than if he made that comment while making $162k/yr.
But isn't $67k enough? It's above the national average, even today. Does that seem fair? Honestly, I don't see why any Democrat should be allowed to earn one penny over the national average. It's about fairness, stupid!

It's all relative to where you live. Chicago has a much higher cost of living than most other places in the country.

However 'fairness' is something Obama knows all about as he said when interviewed that he wanted to increase the capital gains tax even if it decreased revenues because it was about fairness.

the salary in the article was all we really had to go on. I don't think it's just you reading it incorrectly. It's a very poorly written story.

Obama was referring to when he was in the Illinois State Senate and taught at the University of Chicago. For 2004, the last year that he was in the State Senate, he earned about $85,000. Michele earned about $120,000.

Jealous? Does it inform you of how much a failure you are? Having all that "white privilege", and not being able to make it work for you. I'd be bitter too. LOL

He'd probably get a lot less sympathy at $85k than at $67k but the fact remains in a high cost living area $85k with two kids is peanuts.

Of course we are talking about a highly educated and brilliant woman. But keeping her home popping out kids, wiping drool, and supporting her husband's political ambitions would be a "luxury".

For whom?

It depends on what they believe is necessity. 85K per year is nothing to sneeze at in that area.

It's not a bad income, but it's nothing to make hay about w/ regard to his comment. A lot of people can relate to that not being quite enough for a family in certain areas.

Do you buy into that bullshit?
